Senior’s Newsletter - December 2020

From our Captain
December 2020
Welcome news – we’re back on the course again from Wednesday 2nd December, it’ll be good to get that swing going again. The other excellent news is that there are now three potential vaccines that should become widely available in the New Year which means we will be back to something like normality by the Summer. Great news all round!!
In this edition of the Newsletter my theme is being connected – something that has become more important than ever, given the current climate.
We’re all now familiar to a greater or lesser degree (some of us still struggle) with our mobile phones, tablets, laptops and PC’s and how to keep in touch with our friends and families, so it shouldn’t come as a big surprise that the Golf Club is encouraging us to move forward into the new digital age.
You must have noticed that there is less and less information on the Notice Boards as we move over to the use of Apps like HDiDo, Club V1 and EG (England Golf) and other group communication sites like Zoom, Messenger, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram and of course email.
Not forgetting to mention the New Roll Over Screens that will become common place within the club over the next few weeks.
These screens will be connected to the biggest change of all. The new World Handicap System that came into being on the 2nd November 2020 and with the help of these screens we’ll be able to access our course playing handicaps on a regular basis.
As well as the Electronic communication, we’re all being encouraged to refrain from using cash as a payment medium and we all know what has brought this about.
Most of us are au fait with the use of bank cards as a favoured means of payment and our committee and the club are championing the cause. I realise it won’t suit everyone but it is coming, so we will need to embrace it sooner or later.
Strangely enough we did manage to get some golf in at the beginning of the month just before Lockdown 2 begun. The Three Captains Match won by the Vice Captains team admirably led by Malcolm Norton and the Wednesday Swindle won on the day by Tony Carman, but the overall winner for 2020 by just 2 points after several recounts was (yes – you guessed) Malcolm Norton with 237 points, 2nd was Roger Davies with 235. Well done Malcolm!!
I hope that you have been able to sample the walking routes over the two courses during Lockdown, I have to say they both look in excellent nick and I for one can’t wait to be out there once again.
I just want to welcome Peter Hele onto the Committee. He will be taking over from Peter Jay the Communications role with the exception of the Website which “Jaysie” will continue to manage for us.
Finally our congratulations go out to Lesley Garnett who has been appointed to the Board of Golf and Leisure and should be a valuable asset to us and the wider membership.
It only remains for me to wish you all and your families a “Very Happy Christmas and New Year” Let’s hope it’s a better one than this year has been!
In the meantime, enjoy your golf!
Terry M

Welcome to New Members of SbN Seniors
A very warm welcome this month to David Jones who has joined the section during the past month. Hopefully once we are able to play again David will enjoy getting involved with the section, particularly by playing in the seniors swindles. I am sure you will all make David very welcome.

Covid 19
Your committee are continuing to liaise with the Club regarding Covid 19 protocols, as soon as information is received it will be shared with our membership.
Hopefully by the time you read this newsletter, you will be dusting down your clubs and golf gear in preparation for Golf Restart 2.0 on 2nd December – enjoy your golf and may the weather smile on us for a month or so through the winter.

2020 / 2021 Subscriptions
This is just a quick reminder to the few remaining members who have yet to renew their Seniors Section subscriptions (£10) for the new season.
You can either pay electronically, which would be preferable, by bank transfer to the following account: SBN Seniors Golf Section, Sort Code 20-22-69 account number 30985236 And please make it easier for the Treasurer to identify the payment by including your name in the payee reference.
If you would prefer not to make an electronic payment, Paul will accept cheques, in which case, please make the cheque payable to SBN Golf Seniors Section and send it to: Paul Sandfield, 7 Baines Close, Colchester, CO3 4AL.

Winter Singles
This year’s Winter singles competition is under review due to the recent lockdown. An announcement whether it will go ahead and in what format / timescale will be made soon and members will be advised.
Essex Team Competitions
SbN Seniors are once again planning to enter teams into the 2021 Essex Team competitions. These competitions didn’t take place throughout the 2020 season due to the pandemic, but were great fun in 2019, with the John Day team, under Captain Lionel, being pipped in a final playoff by Burnham on Crouch. This time around Lionel Hatch and Peter Garnett have again very kindly offered to manage their respective teams – thanks Gents.
Both teams have Away fixtures in Round 1, the Seniors Team away at Mardyke Valley and The John Day Team away Crondon Park. Both matches are currently scheduled for 23rd April 2021 – look out for team trials notices possibly early next year.

Wednesday Swindles
Malcolm Norton has very kindly once again offered to organise the Wednesday Swindles throughout the next 12 months – this is not the easiest of tasks particularly during the current Covid restrictions – so please continue to give Malcolm your full support. The first Swindle of the new golf year will be held on 9th December.

The Three Captains Match
The traditional 3 Captains Match was held this year on 2nd November, just before our latest withdrawal from the golf courses, and whoever said that golf and wind and rain should never be mixed was spot on ! A particularly windy day, with sudden, but brief interludes of heavy showers made for a particularly challenging round.

One member was very grateful to the club’s green staff who were amazingly fast off the mark, reacting swiftly from a well earned coffee break , to rescue Martin Brown’s electric trolley, plus bag and clubs, except putter, one assumes, from a watery grave in the lake closest to the 17th green ! Sadly no photographic evidence exists.

Anyway, back to the competition, which was won on this occasion by the Vice Captain’s team, skippered in the VC’s unavoidable absence by Malcolm Norton. For the record – the scores, comprising the ten best scores from each team were as follows – Vice Captains’ 338, Past Captains’ 330 and Captains’ 320
