Senior’s Newsletter - January 2021

January 2021

From our Captain

By the time you read these notes we will be rid of the worst year in mine and probably your living memory. I realise at our age wishing our life away is not the thing to do but in this case it is an exception that we are all prepared to make. Covid-19 and it’s variants are getting far too close for comfort.

Two recent cases at the club, one of them a Senior’s Member and his wife have tested positive, so it just shows that even SBN Seniors are not immune to this awful disease and we must all be very careful and respect the government advice. Especially with the new vaccines just coming on stream.

I was in his company for a short while at the weekend before Christmas and was advised to take a test, “not insisted by the family” as I’d developed a mysterious cough (psychological probably) and had to wait till Boxing day for the “Negative” result to come through. Thank God for the Miracle in Medina on Christmas Day, don’t know what I would have done had that not been repeated for the hundredth time.

I now know what it’s like having meals on wheels deliver my Christmas dinner, good practice for later on in life no doubt.

Not much competitive golf during December, in fact just one competition the “Yuletide Scramble” which has now become a regular fund raiser for the Sudbury Storehouse Foodbank and I must thank each and every one of you who contributed to the magnificent total of £1360.00. Special thanks to Roger Davies for his involvement and contribution to a very worthwhile cause.

Congratulation goes to the winning team on the day Derek McWilliams, Alan Finlayson, Adrian Cherry and Peter Hele with a magnificent 56.2 well ahead of the second placed team on 58.6 Phil Hickley, Steve Tree, Keith Oxborrow and Bill Dastur

So now we are under the most severe of restrictions Tier 4 which means for us our Golf Courses can remain open for play but only in the following formats.

1. Individual play

2. Two-balls from the same or different households/bubbles

3. Three or fourballs from the same household/bubble

So once again we find ourselves having to cancel all Club and Senior’s competitions in January apart from the Ladies Winter League which meets all the requirements (two ball) of the Tier 4 restrictions.

For us it’s just one cancellation, the Monthly Stableford on 6th January, which we will hope to fit into the diary sometime later in the year. The other casualty unfortunately is the Wednesday Swindle which will enable some of us a bit of a lay in, not having to get up around 6am to book tees. Enjoy your lay in for the time being “Swindle Bookers” you deserve it.

Finally I would just like to say to all our members who have been unable to participate in the Golf Club either playing or just visiting throughout this crisis that our thoughts are with you and hope you are all still keeping safe and well and we look forward to welcoming you all back to the club in the very near future.

Best wishes to everyone for Happy, safe and prosperous New Year!!

By Royal Appointment – Richard Saunders, British Empire Medal

Congratulations go to SbN Seniors member Richard Saunders, who has been recognised by her Majesty with the British Empire Medal. Richard, pictured below said it came as a "nice surprise" to be awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his services to disability golf.

He ran the British Amputee and Les Autres Sports Association for many years and helped people who had lost limbs to enjoy golf, until the charity was taken over by England Golf.

Mr Saunders said he has been involved with sport his whole life and his work had been important to help people regain confidence.

Great stuff Richard, heartfelt congrats from all your mates in the SbN Seniors Section

Welcome to New Members of SbN Seniors

A very warm welcome this month to Alan Finlayson, Dominic Watts and Colin Pottle who have all joined the section during the past month.  Hopefully they will enjoy getting involved with the section, particularly by playing in the seniors swindles. I am sure you willmake all three gents very welcome.

A couple of our members are heading for pastures new in 2021, both Brian Castle and Neil Farmer have been active members and supporters of SbN Seniors over the years – we wish them well for the future at their respective new clubs. Farewell and good luck to them both, and to any other members who are not continuing with us in 2021.

Covid 19

At the present time, as Terry mentioned, we can only play in 2 balls, therefore I would suggest that any Seniors looking for a playing partner use the Seniors Swindle What’s App, it’s very well supported by our members and often a good place to arrange a game. Contact Malcolm Norton, who will happily add you to the Seniors Swindle What’s App group.

Winter Singles

This year’s Winter singles competition has been cancelled due to the pandemic.

Wednesday Swindles

The Wednesday Swindles are currently suspended due to the pandemic.

Yuletide Scramble - Gainsborough - 14th December

Although conditions underfoot were incredibly wet, the weather at least was kind to us for the annual Yuletide Scramble.

A total of 17 teams took on the challenge, and the out and out winners, with a fantastic score of 56.2, were the quartet of Derek McWilliams, Alan Finlayson, Peter Hele and Adrian Cherry. Their gross 67 for the round included four twos. A great team effort.

Top three scores were:

1. D McWilliams, A Finlayson, P Hele, A Cherry   56.2    Team prize £60

2. P Hickley, S Tree, K Oxborrow, W Dastur - 58.6            Team prize £40

3. P Garnett, D Seymour, D Giles, C Broadhurst - 59.4     Team prize £20

As mentioned by Terry, the event was also to raise funds for the Sudbury Storehouse Foodbank, and a fantastic £1360 was contributedby SbN Seniors – thanks must go to Roger Davies for all his hard work in supporting the cause.

Vicky, Sudbury Storehouse Leader said “Thank you so much for your amazing support it really is appreciated. I think the beginning of 2021 is going to be very tough for people financially so every penny will be used to help those in need locally“

Daily Mail Foursomes

Glen Jackson and Mike Moore of SbN played their 2nd round match of the Daily Mail Foursomes competition against Harwich and Dovercourt GC after their win earlier this year against Fynn Valley GC. Playing conditions on the Gainsborough course were difficult due to heavy rain and water logged fairways but they secured a 4 & 2 victory and now await details for round 3 due to be played during March/April next year. Congrats to Glen and Mike, and the best of luck representing the club in the next round.

Hole in One Alert

Just before the turn of the old year, down on the miniscule temporary 3rd green on the Gainsborough course a strange thing occurred – your newsletter compiler managed to bag himself a hole in one! A reasonably hit gap wedge pitched, took a couple of very small bounces and trundled into the outsized hole. I’m not sure if this counts as a “proper” hole in one – but I’ll be very happy to ding the bell and buy a bottle when we are allowed back in the clubhouse bar. Luckily my playing partner captured the pic below for posterity.
