Steve Tree (15) v Phil Ledger(12)

Phil & Steve ahead of their final

Great prospect of a keenly fought match by two fairly evenly matched players on a morning that begun with a light shower and finished in glorious sunshine.

Phil was the first to strike winning the first hole after Steve put his first drive and brand new ball into the water and consequently conceding the hole.

Phil then went two up winning the Second with a par but Steve soon came back at him on the Third taking full advantage of his first extra shot and a little luck after his second shot finished inches from the now almost full pond. But a great third shot pitching over the pond and finishing within 4 or 5 feet enabled him to squeeze his putt in and win the hole.

The Match was now beginning to swing back and forth. Phil winning the Fourth and Steve winning the Fifth and then the Sixth with a 4 nett 3 going all square.

The Seventh was the first halved hole of the match closely followed by Steve winning Eight and Nine with a great putt to go 2up at the turn.

Phil came splutteringly back (Phil’s words) to edge the Tenth hole with a bogey and to get within one shot of Steve, but a series of Seven halved holes with some great putting on view from both players meant it was going right down to the wire and you could feel the pressure building on both players as they stepped up to drive off on the eighteenth.

Phil was first to go and alas his drive struck the tree on the left of the pond the ball finishing up close and personnel to a broken branch that had he removed it would have dislodged the ball. The only option was to declare it unplayable and take a drop under penalty. His pitch in to the green was fantastic but it was to no avail as Steve had driven his ball just right of the green and a smart chip to within 10  foot of the pin was firmly putted into the hole to secure the win 2up

Can I say it was a pleasure to referee a match played by two excellent players of the highest calibre I could only marvel at the quality of their golfing skills and of course their gentle and incisive banter.

Well done and “Many Congratulations” to Steve.

Many thanks to Senior’s Captain, Terry Mitchell, for both referring this match and providing this report.
