Inter Club Match v Gosfield - Away - 4th May 2023

Gosfield 6 SbN 2

What a lovely day for a game of golf. Gosfield Lakes was in excellent condition and, although a little windy, the sun shone and all was set for a close match, or so Captain Malcolm hoped!

His was the 1st match out and to quote, ‘We got slaughtered!’. Ian said that they needed birdies for halves. They obviously didn’t get many as they lost 6/5. Their saving grace was that Ian won nearest the pin on the 17th.

Things picked up in the 2nd match which saw Rob and John win 3/2. Both teams had a ‘Barnes Wallace’, Rob on the 10th, the opposition on the 3rd. It was a closely fought match but Rob and John’s length off the tee told in the end.

And then things began to slip again! Kevin and Colin said their game was close all the way, until it wasn’t. They lost 3/2. Dave and Bob were level after the front 9 but the opposition chipped in twice on the back. They must have done more for our boys lost 5/3. Bob said that Dave’s golf was so ---- that it made him cry!

Phil and Phil were last off the 1st tee and apart from being ¾ hour behind in finishing (surely it wasn’t our boys fault!) could only manage a loss 2/1. Peter and Trevor were 1stoff the 10th tee and skipped round, only to lose 4/3. Perhaps they should have taken more care. They said that the opposition played better that they did. The proof is in the result!

And then came Ray and Shikhar. What a wondrous pair – mind you, Ray’s use to winning. They said that it was a good team effort with Ray chipping well (for a change!) and chipping in from 40yds on the 14th. They ran out deserving winners 6/4.

Dick and Andy brought up the rear and only just lost 2/1 to a pair who failed to give Dick a gimme which he missed (perhaps it wasn’t a gimme after all!). A tight game played in good spirit.

Gosfield provided an excellent spread that all enjoyed and Captain Malcolm, having announced the result Gosfield 6, Stoke 2, wished everyone a safe journey home.
