Inter Club Match v Haverhill - Gainsborough - 30th August

Stoke by Nayland            5½    Haverhill        2½

Group-1: Malcolm Norton and Andy Cracknell (W 5&4)

Entertaining match. # birdies between us. 2 over gross for round. Dovetailed beautifully.

Haverhill requested that we should be drug tested and reported to the handicap committee.

Group-2: Bill Kemter and Kevin Price (W 4&2)

Some moments of brilliance and some utter rubbish, combined, they somehow gave us a 4 & 2 victory. No pictures as they say! A good match however in good company.

Group-3: John Parkinson and Kevin Walsh (L 2&1)

Tough match giving away 19 and 11 shots. Pars were not good enough. Highlight JP birdie on 18. Our opponents played very well. Solid performance with a number of pars for net birdie. Great to play with Howard Wood aged 85 with two metal knees.

Group-4: Tony Denmead and Gordan Bryan (W 5&4)

An even start but GB & TD won 3rd and 4th and ended 4 up at 9th. Tony was playing extremely well and dovetailing with GB in some holes. Tony was amazed we lost the 13th with a gross birdie to a net eagle. Rob and im were good company and played in good spirit.

Group-5: Bob Filer and Dave Seymour (W 4&3)

Sir Bob Filer was today ‘Sir Bob on Fire’. Seymour as usual was happy to be a passenger as Bob notched up the wins. Winning 4-3, our guests were pleased with the course but were aghast at the condition of the bunkers.

Group-6: Ian Gault and Richard Middleton (L 2&1)

Very tight match, with no side getting more than 1 up until the 16th when SbN lost a ball and the hole! A half to par on the 17th was enough to seal the deal for Haverhill. Match played in good spirit.

Group-7: Dick Lumsden and Brian Roloff (W 3&1)

We had a short, sharp shock losing the first, but steadied the ship and won the next three on the bounce. Looking to go three up at the turn, Haverhill’s Steve had other ideas and chipped in for a 2 at the ninth. We made a pig’s ear of the back 9 but somehow got to dormy 2. We shook hands on the 17th after Brian won the hole with a birdie on his second ball (first went out of bounds). Struggled over the line 3&1.

Group-8: Phil Hickley and David Drew (Drew match)

Never more than 1 hole in it. Switched we went 1 up then Haverhill squared. Phil played really well on the back nine and I contributed very little. Very pleasant morning.

Reporter: Bill Kemter - many thanks Bill for a great report on todays match.
