VETERANS INTER CLUB TEAM COMPETITION - 21st JULY
On July 21, 10 teams of 10 players per team gathered at Braintree Golf Club to compete for the VICT 2025 trophy.
The SbN team, consisting of Bill Wardle, Glen Jackson, Ian McKay, John Smith, Paul Sandfield, Pete Hele, Phil Boyland, Simon Oliphant, and Tony Carman, was carefully selected by playing captain John Parkinson. Captain Parky set a target of 31 points per player, suggesting that achieving this could put the team in contention for victory.
Before teeing off, there was much discussion about the weather, as thunder and lightning were predicted. Fortunately, after some early showers, the sun broke through the clouds for the remainder of the day.
Although the fairways were burnt and had limited grass, the greens and approaches were in exceptional condition—possibly the best greens I've played on this season. They were quick and true. Braintree is a challenging course that requires a strategic approach; players must pick their targets and execute their shots with precision.
After the golf had finished, we enjoyed a delicious two-course dinner, the results were then announced. Captain Parky secured the third-best individual score with 37 points after countback, while the winner achieved an impressive 39 points.
In terms of team scores, Braintree finished with 278 points, Colchester had 280 points, and the SbN team emerged victorious with 283 points, averaging 31.4 points per player, Well played team.
A great result for SbN and the tenth time our club has won this trophy since its inauguration in 1985.
