Unfortunately, at the last moment, Vanders had to withdraw from the contest as his daughter-in-law gave birth to baby Elle, 2 days before planned. Rather than play he went for a cuddle. Congratulations Vanders and Sue on your latest granddaughter.
A Super-sub was drafted in, in the form of John Smith and all looked well organised until Captain Pete realised that he had no pro. Max Toombs was quickly dispatched from the pro-shop and the match could go ahead. He arrived that quickly that he didn’t have time to get his trolley from the car and it wasn’t until later in the round that we realised he was carrying his trolley bag. Not to worry, he’s young and fit!
The match got off to a steady start with JS and Max halving the 1st in par. On the 2nd Max hit a mid iron into the green for 2 but unfortunately was just on the top level, the flag being on the front. JS used his shot and with a par won the hole. Captain Pete won the 3rd with a shot to level the match.
Max played onto the fairway from the trees on the 4th and then stiffed his second for a gimme birdie. JS’s par on the 5th brought it back to level and then there was a run of pars, JS kindly continuing to carry JW, and that included a very long putt on the 6th for Max to match JS’s 4/3. At last JW came into the game with a gimme birdie on the 9th to go 1up.
JW’s par on the 10th saw them 2up, though his par on the 11th was only good enough for a half with Max’s birdie. Again a run of halves until Max, almost on the green in 2 on the 14th, birdied it to bring it back to 1down. A run of net birdie, net birdie (halved by the Captain), net eagle from JW was enough to see the challengers home 3 up with 1 to play.
The match was played in very good spirit with all players making a significant contribution. Max had a gross 70!
Peter thanked the two Johns for the match and their kind contributions to his charity.
