JOHN DAY TROPHY v ROYAL EPPING GC -AWAY - 7th APRIL
ROYAL EPPING 6½ STOKE by NAYLAND 2½
It was challenging to get the match arranged and there was a lot of traffic in the morning, but everyone arrived in time in the new colours, ready to do battle.
It was a bright sunny day, but surprisingly chilly with a strong wind, helping on the first hole. Each team member hit the ball safely along the hole, mostly close to the fairway and I followed our beloved Senior Captain in the last match.
The first few holes are a bit tricky and many matches went down early, mainly because we had to give shots in the majority of the matches. After seeing most groups to the 8th hole, I jumped over to the 11th hole, where the shots given were ending. At this point a few matches had turned our way and some excellent ‘fight backs’ were evident. As I moved to the 15th hole, I had hopes that the match was close.
I walked with a few groups towards the last few holes and saw a number of long putts go in from the opposition and our fine players just missing out. In the end, this was the difference, despite the score, which didn’t truly reflect how close we came.
I would like to thank the players and those at home, sending good vibrations.
Many thanks to Ian McKay for both captaining today’s team but also for his report. Thanks Ian.
