A bright, breezy and cold day saw Stoke by Nayland Seniors open the 2022 inter – club season with a convincing win. Playing a course which was drying out from a very wet period, the away team won 4, halved two and lost two.
Starting with the losses, these were both pretty convincing for Brett Vale, so we shall sweep these under the carpet.
The halves were both exciting matches. John Williams and Rob Swan never took the lead in their match but fought back after being three down to tee off all square at 18. None of the four players made the green in regulation. Rob was first to putt having played a mediocre shot from the bunker leaving a 25 foot putt which he promptly drained. This left Brett Vale’s Ed (9.6HI) with an eight footer to save the match. He made the putt and honours were even.
Roger Davies and Iain Gault had a very tight match. They were one up after 17 but lost the chance of glory by losing 18and halving the match.
Tony Denmead and Tony Carman won 2 and 1. Again they reported a well fought and even match, but the result went the right way.
Phil Boyland and Bob Filer won 2 up. Bob birdied the first and Phil birdied 17 & 18! What a start and finish.
VC Malcolm and Paul Sheffield halved the 18th to win 1 up after having been 4 up at one stage. Must have been a bit tense at times. The opposition reported that Paul was very annoying! Can’t be the Paul we know and love!
And last but not least, Captain Pete and Adrian Cherry won 1 up. Again there must have been some tense moments as they were 5 up after 13! Still, a win’s a win. Apparently Adrian did his best to demoralize the opposition by scoring a par 5 from deep in the trees. It’s, a game of the mind.
Well done the boys.
Many thanks to Rob Swan for his great report on the first Inter Club match of the year.
