SbN         6     Frinton      2

The day dawned cloudy and compared to recent weather somewhat cool at only 70 F. The course was like concrete and the rough had been shaved. Balls ran and ran but not always in the right direction. Those teams venturing out late ended up playing in considerable humidity and a temperature of 85 F as the sun came out. A very acceptable chicken and mushroom pie was consumed afterwards though the modern style of “al dente” vegetables was not to everyone’s liking. An enjoyable match enhanced by the final score.

Pete Robins and Dave Wilson Won: 6 & 5.

Three Peters and a Dave in this group but they managed to sort themselves out. SbN raced to 5 up by the turn thanks to a couple of birdies and, apparently, Peter’s skill in sinking mishit puts. It then took them 4 more holes to administer the final coup de grace.

Adrian Beckingsale and Dave Drew. Won: 2 & 1.

Only two Daves in this match so not too confusing. Dave D might not have quite won this match on his own but it almost felt like it. He set off with 3 straight pars. Adrian, (your intrepid reporter who explored far and wide around the course ending up on occasion in the far side rough of a neighbouring fairway) was able to halve the fourth with a remarkable net par after a totally uninspiring tee shot and SbN moved steadily to a 3-hole lead. But by the turn this had been whittled down to 1. Dave continued to play well despite his bad back worsening considerably. With the help of a further 3 halves from his partner he steered the team to victory on the 17th.

Tony Carman and Colin Pottle. Won: 5 & 3.

Tony was on good form and had 4 birdies. They turned at 2 up and pausing only to admire the miraculous escape of an opposition member nearly allowing his trolley to take an early bath in the lake completed a comprehensive win on the 15th. A hole which was to signal the end for 3 of the Frinton teams.

Terry Mitchell and Steve Mitchell. Won: 4 & 3.

The Mitchell “twins” (aka the Kray Twins), while admitting that their opposition were good company, ruthlessly took out their opponents who agreed that they had been soundly beaten.

Malcolm Norton and Allen Smith. Won: 4 & 3.

Despite receiving no shots our valiant pair got off to a good start and although they were pulled back by the opposition on a couple of occasions, they finally broke away courtesy of 3 birdies from Allen and ended matters on the 15th.

Graham Cork and David Seymour. Won: 2 & 1.

Graham and David struggled early in the round and despite a few pars found themselves two down with 5 to play but showed their resilience by winning four holes in a row. They however confided that they felt that their opposition lost the holes and let them off the hook rather than them winning them. Frinton were always a generous crowd!

Peter Jay and Brian Wilsher: Lost: 2 & 1.

Brian told your intrepid reporter that he had nothing positive to report about his round and said that if anyone wanted to get some different clubs to get in touch as he was considering selling his! but that Peter had played better than his handicap but had been burdened by his partner. Peter generously said that Brian had tried and Brian agreed that he must have been very trying to play with. A very tough match played in an excellent spirit.

Robin Nicholson and Roger Davies: Lost: 2 down.

Roger told me that they were level until they teed off when things got worse. They rallied mid round to go level again but finally succumbed to their more heat and humidity resistant opposition.

Many thanks to Adrian Beckinsale for reporting on todays match - his very first Inter Club match. Thanks Adrian
