Hintlesham   3½    -    SBN   4½

The SBN’s team were welcomed by Hintlesham’s Team Captain over tea and coffee on aclear and warm morning. The overall match proved to be close with SBN winning away from home 4½ matches to 3½. All matches were played with good humour and in a very sporting manner throughout.

Hintlesham were great hosts and the 2 course meal and drinks afterwards were enjoyed by all. Captain Pete thanked them for their kind hospitality and looked forward to seeing them again next year.

Match 1. Capt Pete and Steve Mitchell - Lost 1 down

Captain Pete and Steve went 2 down after 2 holes as a result of long putts (for nett birdies) from the opposition. They managed to halve the next 6 holes but lost the next to go 3 down at the turn. However steady play from both Captain Pete and Steve turned the match to just 1 down going down the 18th. Unfortunately a half on the last hole resulted in a win for the opposition, a great match though.

Match 2. Mike Moore and Trevor Waterhouse – Won 4&3

A great start from Trevor and Mike with pars on the first 3 holes saw them go 3 up. Steady play from Trevor gave them a 4 shot lead at the turn. However, the opposition came back winning the next two holes. Trevor won the 12th hole with a par (against a shot) which stopped the opposition’s recovery and took the SBN’s pair to 3 up and eventually winning on the 15th hole. Well played Trevor.

Match 3. Brian Roloff and John Parkinson – Won 3&2

This was a close game although the result was never in doubt. Brian must have liked the greens as his putting was exceptional and John (as Brian reported) “drove the ball miles”.

Match 4.  Malcolm Norton and Rob Swan – Lost 1 down

After a dodgy first, Malcolm and Rob won the 2nd and 3rd holes with Malcolm driving 320 yards down the 3rd (he missed the eagle putt though). Good play saw them turn 3 up. The back nine however gave the opposition a lift taking them to 1 up with one hole to play. Unfortunately, a par by Malcolm on the last hole was not enough to halve the match.Apparently, one of the opposition only used a seven iron around the course and never missed a fairway. A hard fought and close match.

Match 5.   Adrian Cherry and Dave Wilson – Won 1 up

Although the opponents were very strong, Adrian and Dave managed to stay up throughout the match. Dave played a steady game with five pars and Adrian held the important putts to win the match.

Match 6  Jonathan Perry and Graham Cork – All Square

A well fought match with never more than one hole in it. The match ended up all square with Jonathan winning the last hole. The highlight of the match was Jonathan’s birdie on the 5th hole losing to a nett eagle by the opposition (Geoff Miller, not the former England spinner) who chipped in from 40 yards.

Match 7  Robin Nicholson and Kevin Walsh – Lost 3&2

Despite the loss, both Robin and Kevin had an excellent game but were always chasing the opposition who were playing to par. Robin complimented Kevin as this was his first match for the Senior’s.

Match 8  Dick Lumsden and Tony Emms – Won 2 up

This was a great game, very close all the way round to the 18th green (thirteen holes were halved). Dick and Tony won the 17th to go 1 up then won the last to win 2 up. The highlight of the match was Tony’s 312 yard drive on the 3rd hole. Also, Hintleshams Steve being stung by a bee on the 10th green and needing to use his Epipen in case of a reaction (he still rolled in his par putt for a half though).

Many thanks to Mike Moore for reporting on todays match - cheers Mike 👏👏👏
