Was a lovely sunny day and the course was playing well. As reporter I was glad to be in the second group; but then we found out one of the opposition hadn’t turned up; so a phone call was made and he was still at home in Colchester, as he thought the match was Thursday. He gave an ETA of 25 minutes, so Bob and I were pushed back much later.
Group 1: captain Pete and Phil were 2 up at the turn, but inspired play by NG captain Bernie; Newton Green won by 1 after his hit to the green on the 16th from the penalty area.
Group 2: Bob Filer and Paul ( super reserve ) Sheffield; played Nigel one and Nigel what day is it.
Bob and Paul dovetailed well, both winning holes to par; we’re 3 up after 9. The game was close after Nigel sinking a 15ft putt for birdie on the 16th; then Bob returned the favour with a lengthy putt on the 17th, so we won the match 2&1:
Group 3: Graham Vandervord and Tony Carmen: this was close for 3 holes then the dynamic duo did what they do. Tony putted well with 2 birdies and Graham consistent as ever; winning 5&4.
Group 4: Ray Firth and Robin Nicholson: always down to Newton Green; Steve off 24 but played to 14; to cap it off thinned his second shot on 16 from 100 yds and holes the putt for birdie:
Group 5: Norman Davidson and Rob Swan. All square up to 4, then never looked back and won 5&4:
Group 6: John Williams and Phil Boyland. Not much feedback given on this one apart from John took it apart: sorry didn’t get the score:
Group 7: Tony Denmead and David Drew. All square after 4; dormy at 13. Won the match 4&2:
Group 8: Dick Lumsden and Adrian Cherry. Pretty even game; Dick chipped in for birdie on 3; Adrian birdied 11 and there was only one hole in it; we then won 3 in a row to win 4&3.
SBN won 6&2.
The company and food was appreciated.
Many thanks to “Super Sub”, Paul Sheffield, for reporting on today’s match
