Match 1 Robins & Pottle
The match was played in a very friendly manner. It was nip and tuck throughout but the SBN pairing of Pete Robbins and Colin Pottle managed to keep their noses in front and came out with a 2&1 win.
Match 2 Boyland & Price
After an even start Price got his putting going sinking a couple of monsters and Stoke where up 3 at the turn. Stowmarket rallied but two well timed birdies put the match out of the away sides reach. Win 3&2
Match 3 Davies & Bryan
The late Roger Davies said:- "I murdered Stowmarket Stuart and John on my own and won 4 and 3". He continued:-"It's a pity Gordon didn't help". Your reporter asked:- "Well, how did Gordon do then? "Miserable” Davies replied :-"Gordon scored just a measly 41 points with 3 blobs - 20 points in 6 holds from the 9th; but he hardly helped at all!!" Aforementioned Davies won both the 'Nearest the Pin' and due to the round trip to Stowmarket GC the ‘longest’ drive as well. Win 4&3
Match 4 Hinckley & Jones
Very good (and close) match with holes halved in gross birdies (14th) and mostly gross pars. Mal had three gross birdies in total and Stow’s Neil lipped out for Eagle on the 5th hole, only bagging a birdie!
SbN were one up at the turn and were still one up after 16. The match was closed out with a par on the 17th, winning the hole.
Excellent match played in the right spirit. Win 2&1
Match 5 Simpson & Firth
Ray had a good front nine for Stoke to be 2 up after 10. John came into his own on the back nine halving 12, equalling Neil’s birdie 3, 13 and 14 and winning 15 with his shot. This despite Stowmarket John’s (handicap 28) drive on 14 going OB at about 300 yards !! Stowmarket finally succumbed on 17 when both Neil and John were 3 off the tee despite us warning them not to go left.
Game played in a very good spirit and enjoyed by all 4. Win 3&1
Match 6. Denmead & Filer
A close match all the way through having to give 11 &12 shots to our opponent’s was making winning holes a challenge. After loosing 3 holes on the bounce late on we finally lost dormy 2. Lost 2&1
Match 7. Chatrath & Mitchell
After a close match finally conceding on the 17th. Lost 2&1
Match 8. Ludlum & Middleton
After going behind early Stoke recovered and ended up all square at the turn. Some indifferent putting, which was put down to Middleton awaiting his new glasses?, allowed Stowmarket back into the match. However a par by Ludlum on the 18th was enough to half the match. Halved
Many thanks to Phil Boyland for his reporting of the Stowmarket match.
