SbN     3½         The Warren       4½

An unusual start to the day as Dick Lumsden introduced the players. He was substituting for past captain Terry who could not make it due to Covid. He was substituting for VC Malcom who could not make it due to Covid. He was substituting for Captain Pete who could not make it … you can guess why!! A few late withdrawals made matters more difficult but Pete managed to get volunteers and we managed to field a full team. Bit of a drizzly start with some showers throughout but not too bad.

In match 1 Dick and Andy H raced to a 3 hole lead after eight. But were then hit by an opponent having a run of eight straight pars, four of which were net birdies. This resulted in a loss by 3 and 2.

In match 2 Dave Seymour and yours truly battled hard against very pleasant and friendly opponents. The shots given was a real problem and we never really got on top but stayed within reach until they were dormie 2. At that point Dave took over with a birdie on 17 to win and then a sensational chip in  birdie to win 18 with both Warren players on the green. A memorable finish and a great half.

Match 3 saw John P and Peter J (now named pistol Pete the putter) winning 2 and 1 thanks to some amazing feats on the putting green by PJ.

Match 4 involved Alex G and Paul S in a close game with no more than 2 holes in it at any stage. They took it to the last but unfortunately finished 1 down.

Match 5 saw Peter G and Kevin P in a good match being 2 down early doors but all square after 9. No more than one in it on the back 9 and the pair went from 1 up at 14 to 1 down at 16 and then won the last two holes to win 1 up!!

In match 6 Andy C and John G managed to gain a lead of 3 up at the turn and maintained it well finishing with a 3 and 2 victory.

In match 7 Phil H and Gordon B did not start well with a three hole deficit after three!! They managed to get it back to all square by 14 but the Warren players dovetailed well to finish winning 2 and 1.

Finally, match 8 saw Barry H and Phil B started well with a birdie on the first. However, they peaked too early and a strong finish from the Warren saw them to a 4 and 3 victory.

The final result was a loss for SBN by 4 ½.  to 3 ½. It was a close fought match played in a very friendly and sporting atmosphere. Everyone enjoyed the post match meal and we look forward to the return tie on 29 April.

Many thanks to Dick for stepping up and speaking so well. However, he now has a 100% loss record to consider!!!

Also many thanks to John Jardine for reporting on todays thoroughly enjoyable match.
