Inter Club Match v Benton Hall - Constable - 19th June 2023

SbN         6        Benton Hall          2

In summary  a 7.30am meet at SBN champions lounge saw both teams of 16 meet for Malcolm’s briefing with match 1 teeing off on constable at 8am, in sunny conditions and a light breeze into the players face.
Over night rain making for very green fairways and slightly slower greens.
All matches completed in 4.5hrs then gathered in the Gallery room for a carvery roast followed by some excellent deserts.
There were nearest pins on 8th won by Tony Burham (BH) with an excellent 3’ birdie for his bottle of wine. The 13th saw John Jardine win NP for his IOU bottle.

Match result SBN 6 Benton Hall 2.

Match 1 Norton & Seymour v Quirk & Vale. Captain giving 2 & 3 shots but David getting 8 & 5 shots. After 9 holes SBN are 1 up but all square playing the 18th David managing a roulette style cup hole out to take the match win.

Match 2 Fisher & Mitchell v Burnham 7 & Hayden 14 this gave the SBN pair 11 sh & 16 shots respectively. Would this be a tight match after 1st hole being halved with pars. By the 6th tee SBN stood 2 down, after 7th all square, at half way BH got it back to 2 up. Then snatched 11th with a par, Terry then realising he could have halved that hole with a shot but picked up so 3 down. Terry made up with a fine gross par on 12th Then followed some great match play SBN stood 1 down on 18th tee. All 4 missing the green left each player with a tricky 3 shot putt.
Eric sunk a 4’ curving putt for gross 3 net 2 to halve the match.

Match 3 Denmead & Sir Bob v Mackenzie 8 & Little 15. A very well spirited match with 9 halved holes over the 18 played. Our boys 1 down after 9 then Bobby Filer clinching a nett par on 18 to win the match.

Match 4 Hickley & Davidson v Kitching 14 & Gregory 22. Phil giving 3 & 11 shots the the BH lads. Seems a driving iron was Gregories weapon of choice. SBN one down after 3rd hole then 1 up after 6th.
Halfway match all square. SBN got a beating on 10th, but came back strong winning 12, 14, 15 & 16 to win 3&2.

Match 5. Jardine & Gault v Clark 17 & Taylor 18. Ian giving them 9 shots.
JJ struck with a Sandy PAR on 1st but Taylor struck back with a cheeky chip birdie on 2nd. By 15th SBN we’re 2up only to record a loss.

Match 6 Pottle & Bryan v Jordon 17 & O’Dell 28
Gordon must have stayed for desert seconds as his report took ages to arrive by email, here we go.

Colin was giving away shots to everyone, with one opponent getting 15!
On the first hole this looked genuine with Nigel hitting two drives into the lake and Colin, with a confident, start put SbN 1up.
The high handicapper (Nigel) then proceeded to win holes 2&4, leaving our pair stunned and one down. It was fortunate for Benton Hall that he was playing so well as his partner was playing with a rib injury and only making the occasional great shot that suggested his potential.
Gordon then won holes 5&7 with Nigel winning 8 to bring the match to all square with 10 holes to play. It had been a game of nip and tuck but things changed with Gordon and Colin taking command and winning holes 9, 10, 11 & 13 to go 4up.
Trevor (for Benton Hall) then showed his potential landing on the green in two and taking the hole.  Their comeback was short lived with Colin winning 15 giving SbN a 4&3 win.
The game was won by fine margins on some holes and played in a warm and friendly manner as they continued to chat in the empty restaurant until around 3pm.

Match 7 Mitchell & Lumsden v Robinson 19 & Pestell 20. A tight match flip flopping holes, most notably Dick hitting the 14th in 2 for a near eagle alas a hole draw was that result, which the rolled into a hard fought honourable match draw.

Match 8 Jones & Emms v Williams 19 & Pendleton 25. This match report went on and on and on. Editors cut……
So SBN won 3&2
