A typical old fashioned UK summer’s day greeted our boys at Hintlesham G C..........ie wet and windy. These conditions lasting not far short of when most of the 4 balls finished. When surprise, surprise the sun came out! The course was in excellent condition, with the greens playing very true, if a bit slow due to the rain.
First out into the rain and wind was our captain & Pete. Didn’t go according to plan to start with, going 2 down, but our captain and Pete are made of strong stuff and hauled themselves back to start the back 9 all square. They carried that form through the early holes on the back 9, going 2 up which they kept till the 17th and going out winners 2 – 1
Next out were Steve and Mal who faced the mighty Mick Lambert who dazzled the Tractor Boys with his foot balling skills back in the 70’s. Steve and Mal were 1 up on the 3rd which was the only time there were in the lead. Unfortunately for Steve and Mal, Mick’s sporting skills carried over into his golf and with the help of his partner Geoff overhauled our boys and where 2up at the turn. Both Mal and Steve’s putters were cold and despite getting back to 1 down, soon found themselves 3 down again. Finally Mick and Geoff put our boys out of their misery by winning 4 & 2.
Ian and Richard were never in the contest, certainly on the front 9, where they found themselves 4 down to opposition who Ian said chipped and putted like pro’s. Did slightly better on the back 9, but according to Ian, he and Richard had no luck!!
Following them were Richard and Gordon ‘Tesco Metro’ Bryan. According to Gordon it was a close contest all the way round with never more than 1 shot in it. Fortunately the 1 shot was in their favour, winning 1 up.
Game 5 saw Graham and Roger hit the fairways......well Corky did fortunately as RD had one of his off days. Infact it was Corky v the Hintlesham boys with RD watching on in admiration of his partner. With Corky playing 6 under his handicap, the result was never in doubt, with them, well Corky really, going out winners 2 & 1.
Andy and Nick set off on the 17th tee which rather threw them, losing their way from the very start of their match. Andy said he had a belter of a bad round, which left Nick to try and fend off the opposition. Which unfortunately he couldn’t and the Hintlesham boys, according to Andy just nicked it 7&6!!
Game 7 saw TC and Bill head off. A very tight match, where according to TC there was a lot of ‘nicking’ going on! Well I think that is what he said; or was it ‘necking’. Anyway, they did alright up until the last few holes, where finally their wheels game off, going down by 2.
Final pairing of Kevin and Brian saw a tight match, with very little in it or as some would say, ‘nip and tuck’. (Just had to put that in!!) However the hosts forgot they were the hosts, reeling off gross birdies on the 14th and 15th which meant Kevin and Brian ran out losing 3 & 1.
The game was followed by a very nice meal, which our Captain said was the best meal he had had after an Inter Club game. What better than a SbN meal.........surely not!!
Many thanks to Mal Jones for his excellent reporting of todays fun and games at Hintlesham - clearly a tough days golf.
