Inter Club Match v Stowmarket - Away - 8th August 2023

STOWMARKET 6½ STOKE BY NAYLAND 1½

This match was originally scheduled for the middle of March but postponed due to the course being closed because of adverse weather. Today was a completely different story with the course being in excellent condition and the sun even came out for a while.

The golf was then followed by a very nice lunch of Lasagne with salad and garlic bread.

MATCH 1          MALCOM NORTON / TONY CARMAN - LOST 4 & 3

Malcolm spent a lot of time in a lot of bunkers. We gave our opponents 30 shots between them and they used them to great effect. John Bell,  who played very consistently off his 26 h/c and was outdriving us on a lot of occasions was 82 years of age (same as our Sir Bob). 2 down after 9, never recovered.

MATCH 2             TONY DENMEAD / BRIAN ROLOFF - WON 2 & 1

A slow start , only 1 down after 5 holes thanks to Brian, Tony then kicked in and we slowly got back to 4 up with 6 to play. They then started to come back at us winning 2 of the next 4 holes. A half on 17 saw us over the line. No need to mention the 11 & 13 shots given away.

MATCH 3          JOHN JARDINE / PETE HELE - MATCH HALVED

Never got in front in this match, another slow start being 2 down after 3 but managed to get it back to 1 down after 9. A very tight back 9 saw us get a half by winning the 18th. A really good game in great company

MATCH 4         IAIN GAULT / NEIL ASHWELL - LOST 5 & 3

i Too many trees

ii Too much grabby grass

iii Greens difficult

Paul and Robert didn’t have these problems, Paul especially played very well and made the most of his shots.

MATCH 5         IAN BICKERS / STEVE MITCHELL - LOST 6 & 5

A very one sided match, 4 down after 4, 5 down after 9.

Eventually lost 6 & 5 without winning a hole.

MATCH 6            PHIL BRENNAN / PHIL BOYLAND - LOST 3 & 2

SBN boys were well beaten, dropping to 4 down at one stage. It looked like the game had turned when Phil Boyland birdied the 7th. Pulled it back to 2 down but the Stowmarket boys continued to play well and the match slipped away.

MATCH 7        ALAN LINE / JOHN WILLIAMS - LOST 2 & 1

Their 20 something handicapper played exceptionally well, being 1 over gross after 5 holes leaving us 3 down. Fought back valiantly but lost 2 & 1.

MATCH 8     BILL KEMTER / COLIN POTTLE - LOST 1 UP

An up and down round for both teams before Stowmarket took a slender lead toward the end. A nailbiting finish saw the 18th halved to see the home team win by a slither.
