SbN 4½ Felixstowe 3½
On a fine day in August a stout SBN team took on the might of Felixstowe fresh from their Win in the Seniors multi team comp at Purdis Heath. The weather was a vast improvement on the away fixture at Felixstowe where a gale with rain and sleet prevailed.
Match 1 Won 5&4
Captain John led the way ably hindered by Brian “shorts” Roloff.
To start they were up and down like a fiddlers elbow with ex Stoke member Billy Thompson causing havoc. However class told and John and Brian ended winning 5&4.
Match 2 Won 3&1
Richard Middleton and Lionel were next up taking shots from Chris and Roger and did Richard make those shots count? He enjoyed four nett birdies and played some steady golf ending with a 3&1 win. Lionel also played his part, he found several balls.
Match 3 Lost 2&1
Ian McKay and Nick Wright took on Mark and Stephen ( the high handicapper) and suffered from HHS (high handicapper syndrome) where Stephen birdied the 3rd won the 4th and parred the 5th in a hot streak. Still plenty of holes left the long and the short of it was Nick and Ian (get it?) fought back bravely but succumbed to HHS again when Stephen had pars on 16th and 17 to win it for Felixstowe 2&1
Desperately unlucky
Match 4 All square
Let me introduce you to Bandit Bob. He played with John against Tony C and future vice Graham. I met Future vice on the 13th where he severely injured a tree smashing it with his poor little ball. Good thing was, he ended up on the fairway but it was the 14th. Anyway due to the help of B Bob Felixstowe turned at 3up but there’s inner strength in the Stoke boys as the brought it back to all square albeit a very generous putt given to Tony by John on the 18th.
Apparently Bandit Bob did an Alice in Wonderland by disappearing down a rabbit hole on the 10th. Shame he didn’t stay there.
Match 5 Lost 2&1
Paul Sheffield and Barry H succumbed to a 2&1 loss to Jim and Graham unfortunately. Paul said he played his normal game but he was even worse and Barry carried the team but blamed his putting on tips Lionel gave him on the putting green the day before. Further advice for Barry-Have a word with your boy.
Match 6 Won 6&5
Vice Kevin and Andy (slap it up there) Cracknell encountered the two Andrew’s who were up against it as Andy said “The Price Was Right “ . Our Vice Captain was on the money and played his little heart out. Andrew and Andrew drew some comfort from this saying “He was a bit lucky on occasions” Nuff said
Match 7 Lost 1down
Andy Higginson and Iain Gault are a formidable pairing. The Little and Large of golf and whilst they were giving a shot or 10 they were nailed on gold medal hopes.
Oh dear. One over gross through 5 but 2 down that’s desperately unlucky, and so the story went. That word Bandit was mentioned again in dispatches. So sad.
The game was played in good spirit with severe nashing of teeth on the
Stoke part
Match 8 Won 2up
Ex Cpt Malcolm and Phil B took on my mate ( yes I have some) Richard and Mike in I’m told was a very good game. Malcolm was giving a first outing to his new clubs and Phil was there to keep him under control. The clubs behaved themselves as did Malcolm. Phil as you would expect gave the odd shot but the lads came through 2up.
Can I just thank the respective guys who gave me their scribbled reports to decipher.
Final result. 1 up to SBN Stoke Seniors.
Methinks a round of applause to Stoke Seniors 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
