We were welcomed at Ipswich with a full English and coffee for our first ever Inter Club match on the Purdis Heath course. Conditions were quite tricky with a windy morning on a fast running course, but luckily the weather improved throughout the day.
Ipswich also field 12 man teams, so another different scenario for SbN.
Match Result Ipswich 4½ SbN 1½
Match 1. - Capt Parky and VC Price
Great play from JP with the occasional support from Shanker VC was unfortunately not enough to defeat the Purdis Pair, who played exceptional golf throughout. Lost 3& 2
Match 2. - Peter Hele and Malcolm Norton
After losing the first to a birdie, we thought we’d be up against it, however, that was the only hole our opponents won all day. Pete and Malcolm proceeded to dovetail nicely, playing 4 over gross betterball, and closed out a stress free match on the 14th green. Won 6&4
Match 3. - Dick Lumsden and Brian Roloff
This match was on fire from the start, with five birdies in the first six holes, unfortunately four were for Paul from Ipswich , and only a two for Dick on the 3rd in reply. Somehow we hung on to be one down at the turn, but class told in the end and we finished on the wrong side of a 3 & 2 defeat. Lost 3&2
Match 4. - Ian Bickers and Andy Cracknell
We had a very close match with SbN 1 up at the turn. The back nine was also nip and tuck and went to the last, with the match being halved overall, highlight of the morning was Ian’s par on the second, which under Stableford format would have given him 5 points. Match Halved
Match 5. - Gordon McKay and Ian Bryan
SbN we’re 2 down after 2 to 2 birdies, and 4 down after 5, but after some sparkling play from the SbN pair they were all square, and even went 1 up on the 11th - but alas, the excitement was all too much for our gallant lads and Ipswich roared back to win - - a great match and lots of fun. Lost 2&1
Match 6.- Trevor Waterhouse and Eric Fisher
Playing Andy, 20, and Les, 21, giving them 5 shots. Trev parred the 1st to go 1 up, and then the 2nd was the 1st of 11 Halves, with Ipswich winning the 3rd and 7th, and were 1 up at the turn. After being all square on the 10th, Ipswich won the 11th and closed out the match by one hole. Lost 1 down.
The match was very enjoyable, played in great spirit, with a suggestion of Hambro scoring in 2025, to be agreed by next year’s Captains.
Many thanks to Peter Hele, and all contributors for the match report.
