INTER CLUB MATCH v STOWMARKET - HOME - 24th JULY
SbN 4 STOWMARKET 4
The sun shone clearly over the Church in Nayland as two of the finest teams met to do battle. The weather was clear a little cloud and a little breeze perfect for the games ahead. A few traffic problems meant the first game went out second with Stowmarket down a man for one hole! The geese were in good form and adding the usual amount of fertiliser to what looked like a perfect course now playing really well after a very wet winter.
The opposition started a man down but up to full strength by the second hole. The match was touch and go through the front nine and level at the turn but Sbn pulled away over the next five holes holding on to close out 4 and 3.
A very close game nip and tuck all the way round. At the half way it was even but Sbn fell away in the last few holes despite a fine challenge by Peter on the 17th which would have been even going to 18. Neil had one decent shot on the par 3 8th which was an inch away from being a very expensive hole in one! However the bottle of red was good compensation!
Match 3 Dick Lumsden and Steve Mitchell Result Sbn lost 2 and 1
Another tight match with never more than a two hole lead which changed hands a few times. Unfortunately Sbn came out on the wrong side when the opposition holed out from ten feet off the green! At least the company was very enjoyable.
Match 4 Ian McKay and Peter Jay Result Sbn Won 3 and 2
Ooooops, two poor tee shots on the first tee didnt bode well - one down. But a purple spell by both Ian & PJ on the front nine resulted in four up at the turn! This was held onto until a loss on the 14th the team from Sbn dovetailed a dream!
Match 5 Iain Gault and David Drew Result Sbn lost 3 and 2
Another close game all square at the turn, then out played on the second nine after a Stowmarket drive on the 14th and a mid iron onto the green for an easy par. Sbn not used to the fantastic greens and had some close shaves on the putting.
Match 6 Trevor Waterhouse and Graham Cork Result Sbn Won 4 and 3
Match played in great spirit and was tight for most of the match but went ahead with Graham's tap in for a birdie on the 6th. The next four holes were halved but the team dovetailed to great effect winning 11,12, and 13 to win 4 and 3.
Match 7 Tony Denmead and Richard Middleton Result Sbn lost 4 and 3
Good contest played in excellent spirit, very even for the first twelve holes with only two halved, then the wheels came off. They used their shots well for a 4 to 3 victory.
Match 8 Bill Kemper and Mick Henry (alias La Cucaracha) Result Sbn Won 5 and 3
