INTER CLUB MATCH v COLNE VALLEY - 9th JUNE

 COLNE VALLEY       5       SbN          3

Stoke By Nayland travelled to East Colne for the away game at Colne Valley Golf Club
where several seasons were experienced in the same day. The sun shone, the wind blew
and the rain was wet! The course was in good condition, but the greens were mostly slow.
Colne Valley team mastered the conditions and the course somewhat better than us and ran
out worthy 5-3 winners.

Match 1: Brian Boomer/Andrew Moore (CV) vs Graham Cork/Phil Boyland (SbN).
Colne Valley won 3&2
Colne Valley got off to a fast start with Brian chipping in at the first. The home side coped
with the pace of the greens very well, seldom missing a pressure putt. The arrears were
reduced to 1 at the 10th but despite Phil’s valiant efforts, the match was lost at the 16th .

Match 2: Steve Leak/Keith Nice (CV) vs John Parkinson/Kevin Walsh (SbN)
Colne Valley won 3 & 2
A tight match with only 1 in it until the last 5 holes. There were birdies galore but SbN’s
putting was the difference between the teams (but not in a good way). The match was
played in good humour only spoiled by the heavy shower.

Match 3: Jason Stanier/Phil Tyler (CV) vs Simon Merriam/Stuart Lawson (SbN).
Stoke By Nayland win by 1 hole
After failing to take the advice of how to play the first hole, the SbN boys quickly found
themselves one down but quickly returned to all square after the 2nd ! The 4th was halved with
good putts under pressure from both sides. After squaring the match at the 8th , we were
quickly down by 1 at the turn. That was extended to two down at the 10th but wins on the 12th
and 13th got us back to all square. Simon won the 15th and whilst Stuart missed a chance to
clinch the match on the 17th , we hung on to win.

Match 4: Peter Regan/Bryan Powell (CV) vs Eric Fisher/Dave Drew (SbN)
Colne Valley won by 4&2
SbN came up against a very much in form Peter who had 8 pars in the round and he gelled
well with his partner. Despite the valiant efforts of Eric and David, the match was lost at the
16th . Conditions were made tougher by the wind but the opposition was great company.

Match 5: Ian Gwyther/’JP’ (CV) vs Colin Dallas/Iain Gault (SbN)
Stoke By Nayland won 2&1
The SbN boys thought they were in for a drubbing when Colne Valley went 2 up after the
first two holes but a great turnaround found the SbN boys two up at the turn – the highlight
being Colin’s nett eagle at the 5th . CV fought back winning the 11th & 12th holes but Colin and
Ian put their foot on the gas to be dormy 3 on the 16th . The 17th was halved to win the match.

Match 6: Rick Britland/Norris Silk (CV) vs Bob Filer/Tony Reeves (SbN)
Colne Valley Won by 1 hole
Although this match was tight, SbN could never get their noses in front. An unlikely half at
the 9th ensured that SbN were only 2 down at the turn. The deficit to was quickly reduced to
1 hole where it stayed until the 15 th where CV won the hole. That was quickly chalked out at
the 16th but a birdie by Rick (CV) cemented the victory at the final hole.

Match 7: Roger Warren/Paul Bellamy (CV) vs Bill Kemter/Shikhar Chatrath (SbN).
Colne Valley won by 1 hole
In a match of nip and tuck, this one went to the final hole only for the hopes of the SbN team
to be dashed. Bill, in particular, was up against it giving 21 shots to the opposition and by his
own admission, Shikhar couldn’t support him as well as he would have liked (in his usual
style, Shikhar’s precise description of his game cannot be printed).

Match 8: Stephen Peeling (CV) vs Tony Denmead/Richard Middleton (SbN)
Stoke By Nayland won 3&2
Unfortunately, Stephen found himself without a partner to take Tony & Richard on. Despite
that he put up a brave fight using his more than generous 15 shots. Once the SbN boys went
ahead after five holes, they were never pegged back. Two opponents would have been
preferable but a win is a win.
There was a nearest the pin competition for the SbN boys on the 3rd which was won by Kevin
Walsh.
Another enjoyable day of golf with very friendly opposition and the general consensus was to
ensure this fixture becomes a regular again. We look forward to welcoming Colne Valley on the 21 st August for the return match.

Many thanks go to Stuart Lawson who took on the responsibilites of reporting on this match. Thanks Stuart.
