INTER CLUB MATCH v FELIXSTOWE - 7th AUGUST
SbN 6 HINTLESHAM 2
Home result: Won 6 & 2Away result: Lost 7 & 1Overall: Lost by 1
Group-1: Kevin Walsh (acting Captain) and Nick Wright [1 up]
Very close match over 18 holes. Flexistowe went 1 up on the first, but not for long – seesaw game as holes were halved or won. Stoke went into 18h, 1 up and ended the match 1 up.
[Footnote: Had Graham Corke (on holiday) played with Kevin Walsh, then the match pairs might have been Kevin + Graham (SbN) vs Kevin + Graham !
Group-2: Graham Stubbs and Pete Hele [Won 3&2]
The second group out saw a very nip and tuck front nine. There was never more than one hole in it, with the away pairing helped by the treacherous 6th where both home players bombed! It was ‘levels you devils' at the turn but SbN finally took advantage of their local knowledge. That said, Flexistowe did not crumble and got within a rizla paper of their opponents, only for SbN to win the par three 13th (well done Heley). That's where it stayed until the mighty Stubbs parred the 16th to secure a 3&2 victory.Overall, a very enjoyable match with lovely company.
Group-3: Tony Reeves and Bill Kemter [Won 2&1]
Really close game and never more than 2 holes in it. The game result ebbed and flowed. Highlight for the opponents was a par on the 12th and a birdie on the 8th. Both Bill and I knitted into one throughout. Bill birdied the 11th, and as holes were running out, we managed to retain our narrow advantage to win 2&1, including really enjoyable company from our highly respected opponents.
Group-4: Iain Gault and Simon Merriam [Won 2&1]
Good tight game and good banter. SbN went 1 down after 2, fought back to 3 up through 8, then lost 1! Got to 3 up through 14, but lost 15 and 16. Squeaky bum time, but Simon saved the day with a par on 17 to close it out.
Group-5: Richard Middleton and John Carpenter [Won 5&4]
Match was played in a friendly and relaxed manner with mot much between the two teams. First 4 holes halved then we won the 5th. We all had a nightmare on the 6th with all the tee shots down on the 4th – almost impossible to keep the ball on the 6thfairway! We won the next 8 holes finishing on the 14th with John having a nett eagle. Great to welcome John to his first time match representing SbN.
Group-6: Mick Henry and Richard Allen [Won 5&4]
Richard was the star of the show today. After losing the first hole, Richard holed at least 5 pressure putts of around 5 feet to win each hole. 3 up coming to the 11th , Mick suddenly stepped up with a crushing birdie, and then winning the match on the 12thhole. Richard has kindly volunteered to provide expert putting lessons to SbN Seniors.
Group-7: Eric Fisher and Del McWilliams [1 down]
Starting on 17th with our par secured, we went 1 up. On the18th, our opponents levelled the match. The match remained close and never more than 2 holes separated the teams. At hole 15, our opponent Alan net birdied to make the match all square. Playing the final hole (16th), Alan again net birdied to win the match 1-0 to Flexistowe.
Group-8: Ray Ludlam and Dave Seymour [1 down]
A tight game throughout. Only lost on the last hole. Good company and a close match, yet 5 and a half hours to complete our match at the back of the field is far too long to endure!
Many thanks to Bill Kemter for taking on the reporting responsibilities for the Felixstowe match. Thanks Bill.
