INTER CLUB MATCH v THE WARREN - 23rd APRIL
THE WARREN 6 SbN 2
Match 1: This started badly with SBN going 4 down early, but they rallied to get back to 1 down by the turn. John was particularly good on the back nine and was instrumental in gaining the lead, with good putting on greens that were not easy to judge. They finally reached a winning score of 3up with 2 to play when the home team had two successive birdies, if a bit late. Good start for Stoke.
Match 2: The loss on the first hole set the tone for the match. Ian then had 3 straight pars and only managed a half on one of them. It was agreed that the home team were getting the best luck. SBN managed to win a few holes, but the home team used their shots well and dovetailed on the holes to win on the 17th.
Match 3: The players in this match had no particularly incident but felt that the home team putted much better on the greens, even though the shots to the green were equal to the opponents, this is known as “home advantage”.
Match 4: Our players were finding the greens difficult to judge, which you may have noticed, is a recurring theme. The home team went off to a good start and despite our boys rallying back the home team maintained the lead at the end.
Match 5: The Stoke players have reiterated the previous comments about the difference in putting and we suffered another loss.
Match 6: Our team said that it was a good match played in the right spirit, but like others go off to an early few losses which despite a ‘mini recovery’, the home team won fairly comfortably.
Match 7: Guess what! SBN went out to early losses and never managed to get back close to level terms. The highlight was David finding two balls.
Match 8: This was the light at the end of the tunnel, with the second victory for Stoke. It was a fairly close game with 11 halved holes. Our boys did better on the back nine and managed to retain a small lead. Well done boys!
