A small but perfectly formed field for the first scramble of the year on Gainsborough today.
Just 12 teams contested the event, but with each group having very similar handicaps it was no wonder the scoring was so even. From first place to last place, only seven shots separated everyone.
Another consistency we noticed was that all players had difficulty putting on the heavily sanded greens, with putts coming up short on every hole.
But despite the weather, the sandy greens and the random groupings, four teams did manage to card gross scores in red figures below par. But when handicaps were applied, it was Neil Ashwell, Mark Clark, Rob Swan and Mike Clare who came out ahead with a nett 57 (gross 68).
The other winner on the day was the Captain's Charity with £1 from every entry fee going in the pot.
