SENIORS

July 2023

From your Captain:

Wow, what a senior’s section we have!

I undertook a very modest 36-hole challenge for my charity and all of you sponsored me to the staggering sum of £1200.00.

This now brings my charity fund to over £2200.00. absolutely phenomenal!!!

I am getting very excited about the day on 7th August, this year as well as the usual 4balls to bid for, I have a few special treats.

Please- Please- Please put the date in your diary for what I hope will be an enjoyable day.

In due course, I will send a flyer out, detailing the day.

Thank you.

Just literally in, I’m pleased to announce that my very own VC, John Parkinson, has won the Essex Seniors over 65 sections at Chelmsford with an Eagle and a birdie on the only par 5, well played John.

Please continue to enjoy your golf on our terrific golf courses, please rake the bunkers and continue to repair yours and other peoples pitch marks, it’s all for our own benefit.

All for this month

Malcolm

Inter Club Matches

June is the month in 2023 when we are treated to our annual feast of mirth and wit, being the report from our literary correspondent, Mr Roger R2D2 Davies. See the report on Gosfield at home, featured below:

Inter Club Match v Frinton - Away - 5th June 2023

                                            Frinton     8      SbN        0

The day was full of expectation for a ‘grand day’ out by the sea. Some had even donned shorts for the occasion; regrettably this was the first of many bad decisions on the day. The weather was distinctly overcast and chilly with that biting north wind we have come to love.

Our Captain together with Jonathan Perry set the tone for the day going 3 down in very short order and although they brought the match back to all square, they eventually succumbed losing 2 down.

Andy Cracknell and your honorary reporter made the mistake of winning the first hole and after a closely fought contest and putting up an ‘admirable defence’, according to Crackers – lost 2 & 1

I have to regrettably report these matches were our best two results of the day, so it will give you some idea of what is to follow; a litany of misery!

Pete Hele and Sir Bob lost 3 & 2, with the pair having taken just a gross 69 shots (1 birdie & 9 pars) after playing 16 holes before throwing in the towel. Pete declared ‘he couldn’t figure out what was happening’, having to give 19 shots to someone playing off 30 who kept paring holes, I have got a pretty good idea. It has been reported our pair of likely lads were not bitter (honest guv!) and John from Frinton was very apologetic throughout the post-match meal.

The outstanding performance of the day belongs to Alan Finn Larsen and Del McWilliams, who failed to win a hole during their encounter and not surprisingly lost 8 & 7, well at least they halved 2 holes

Kevin Price and John Williams, who gave 16 shots, lost 5 & 3 but John was very proud of the fact that he birdied the long par 3 16th but that was after the match was over.

Graham Cork & Nick Wright also picked up a silver medal losing 3 & 2, Graham attributed this to his cunning tactic of hitting his ball into the thick rough which really did not payoff.

Ian McKay and Brian Roloff, in Brian’s words got ‘royally stuffed’ 4 & 3

David Seymour & Eric Fisher also lost 4 & 3 and were last seen seeking professional help.

Needless to say we did not win the nearest the pin and only managed to pickup 2 raffle prizes out of the 9 on offer.  n.b. Malcolm picked out his own ticket

So, 16 somewhat bemused ‘golfers’ returned to Stoke with their tails between their legs muttering something about ‘that we will get them back at our place’. Oh poor deluded fools

We must extend a warm thank you to Frinton for their generous hospitality and excellent food.

Many thanks to Alan Line who cheerfully accepted the responsibility of writing this report before heading off to seek his own counselling.

Inter Club Match v Felixstowe - Away - 12th June 2023

Felixstowe 4.5 pts, Stoke by Nayland 3.5 pts

The warm, balmy weather on the coast at Felixstowe played host to a match much looked forward to by the SbN team, looking to avoid another pasting by the sea – witness the recent match at Frinton. The course was in excellent condition with fast, running fairways, quick greens and rough that was a little too long for some (including your match reporter). The traditional fish & chips was, once again, excellent.

Match 1 SbN pair: Malcolm Norton and Nick Wright (WON 6 & 5)

Without much opportunity to play in ditches at Stoke, Malcolm became particularly attached to them and decided also that the bunkers were there to be used. However our Captain had chosen his partner well with Nick, playing for the first time on the Felixstowe links, coming in with an impressive 39 stableford points, including two blobs. Having carried Malcolm for much of the round, Nick’s shoulders were rather sore by the end but the early drink and fish & chips did the trick.

Match 2 SbN pair: Phil Hickley and Kevin Walsh (MATCH HALVED)

Having raced into a two-up lead after two holes, the Stoke pair thought they were going to register a comfortable victory. However that was not to be the case and the Felixstowe duo wrestled the game back to go one up after ten holes. Kevin used his shots well to take the match to all square after fifteen only for the Stoke pair to go one down on the seventeenth. Nerves were in play on the eighteenth with opponent Stephen making 3 (with his provisional ball) and partner Malcolm coming up short of the green after two shots. This ultimately left Phil to hole an awkward three-footer for par to win the hole and square the match.

Match 3 SbN pair: Andy Cracknell and Trevor Waterhouse (LOST 4 & 3)

The Stoke team knew they were in for a struggle given the quality of their opponents play right from the off. Long (and straight) off the tee, towering irons into the greens and solid putting from the Felixstowe pair saw them comfortable winners on the day. A good friendly match however, even though the Stoke boys felt that had they played another eighteen holes, the margin of victory would only have got bigger.

Match 4 SbN pair: Iain Gault and Tony Emms (MATCH HALVED)

An excellent game which was close throughout and produced a grandstand finish with Tony holing from 60 feet to win the eighteenth hole and secure the half-point for the Stoke team. A great result considering the number of shots the SbN team were giving away on the day.

Match 5 SbN pair: Alan Finlayson and Phil Boyland (MATCH HALVED)

Another close duel in the sun with Alan’s putter red-hot throughout with him not missing anything inside 10 ft. (Is this the same Alan I’ve partnered?) Phil incurred the wrath of the group ahead with his opponents confidently telling him that he could safely play towards the green as ‘he’d never reach them from so far back’ only to send the players scurrying for shelter as his ball arrowed in to the green. A good match, played in the right spirit and close throughout.

Match 6 SbN pair: Terry Mitchell and Steve Mitchell (LOST 2 & 1)

The only difference in this really close affair was the Felixstowe pair’s uncanny ability to hole long putts from off the green which they achieved on three occasions, all at critical points in the game, much to the annoyance of the Stoke pair. So…if the first experiment with the pairing of two Mitchells didn’t quite workout……

Match 7 SbN pair: Del McWilliams and John Williams (LOST 6 & 5)

…..neither did the McWilliams/Williams team, falling to the biggest defeat of the day. However that only tells half the story with the Felixstowe pair shooting one over par gross after the first seven holes leaving the Stoke duo six down. That pretty much did for the match with the rest of the game returning to a more usual standard, meandering to a predictable conclusion. Bad luck to Del and John on this occasion coming up against tough opponents.

Match 8 SbN pair: Bob Filer and Dave Drew (WON 3 and 2)

A closely fought match with the Stoke pair dovetailing nicely on the front nine to go to the turn one up, helped in no small part by Dave’s birdie three on the fourth hole to secure a half! The back nine saw Bob’s natural talent shine through, ably assisted by Dave, with Bob recording pars on 11, 14 and 16 to close out a relatively comfortable victory.

Many thanks to Phil Hickley for his report on today’s trip to the seaside.

Inter Club Match v Benton Hall - Constable - 19th June 2023

                                       SbN         6        Benton Hall          2

In summary  a 7.30am meet at SBN champions lounge saw both teams of 16 meet for Malcolm’s briefing with match 1 teeing off on constable at 8am, in sunny conditions and a light breeze into the players face.

Over night rain making for very green fairways and slightly slower greens.

All matches completed in 4.5hrs then gathered in the Gallery room for a carvery roast followed by some excellent deserts.

There were nearest pins on 8th won by Tony Burham (BH) with an excellent 3’ birdie for his bottle of wine. The 13th saw John Jardine win NP for his IOU bottle.

Match 1 Norton & Seymour v Quirk & Vale. Captain giving 2 & 3 shots but David getting 8 & 5 shots. After 9 holes SBN are 1 up but all square playing the 18th David managing a roulette style cup hole out to take the match win.

Match 2 Fisher & Mitchell v Burnham 7 & Hayden 14 this gave the SBN pair 11 shots & 16 shots respectively. Would this be a tight match after 1st hole being halved with pars? By the 6th tee SBN stood 2 down, after 7th all square, at half way BH got it back to 2 up. Then snatched 11th with a par, Terry then realising he could have halved that hole with a shot but picked up so 3 down. Terry made up with a fine gross par on 12th Then followed some great match play SBN stood 1 down on 18th tee. All 4 missing the green left each player with a tricky 3 shot putt.

Eric sunk a 4’ curving putt for gross 3 net 2 to halve the match.

Match 3 Denmead & Sir Bob v Mackenzie 8 & Little 15. A very well spirited match with 9 halved holes over the 18 played. Our boys 1 down after 9 then Bobby Filer clinching a nett par on 18 to win the match.

Match 4 Hickley & Davidson v Kitching 14 & Gregory 22. Phil giving 3 & 11 shots the the BH lads. Seems a driving iron was Gregories weapon of choice. SBN one down after 3rd hole then 1 up after 6th.

Halfway match all square. SBN got a beating on 10th, but came back strong winning 12, 14, 15 & 16 to win 3&2.

Match 5. Jardine & Gault v Clark 17 & Taylor 18. Ian giving them 9 shots.

JJ struck with a Sandy PAR on 1st but Taylor struck back with a cheeky chip birdie on 2nd. By 15th SBN we’re 2up only to record a loss.

Match 6 Pottle & Bryan v Jordon 17 & O’Dell 28

Gordon must have stayed for desert seconds as his report took ages to arrive by email, here we go.

Colin was giving away shots to everyone, with one opponent getting 15!
On the first hole this looked genuine with Nigel hitting two drives into the lake and Colin, with a confident, start put SbN 1up.
The high handicapper (Nigel) then proceeded to win holes 2&4, leaving our pair stunned and one down. It was fortunate for Benton Hall that he was playing so well as his partner was playing with a rib injury and only making the occasional great shot that suggested his potential.
Gordon then won holes 5&7 with Nigel winning 8 to bring the match to all square with 10 holes to play. It had been a game of nip and tuck but things changed with Gordon and Colin taking command and winning holes 9, 10, 11 & 13 to go 4up.
Trevor (for Benton Hall) then showed his potential landing on the green in two and taking the hole.  Their comeback was short lived with Colin winning 15 giving SbN a 4&3 win.
The game was won by fine margins on some holes and played in a warm and friendly manner as they continued to chat in the empty restaurant until around 3pm.

Match 7 Mitchell & Lumsden v Robinson 19 & Pestell 20. A tight match flip flopping holes, most notably Dick hitting the 14th in 2 for a near eagle alas a hole draw was that result, which the rolled into a hard fought honourable match draw.

Match 8 Jones & Emms v Williams 19 & Pendleton 25. This match report went on and on and on. Editors cut……

So SBN won 3&2

Thank you for your reports and good luck at Benton Hall on 4th August.

Many thanks to Eric Fisher for his report on today’s match – thanks Eric

Inter Club Match v Gosfield – Gainsborough - 28th June 2023

                                                    SbN    5        Gosfield    2

If you can drive it straight when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust your swing when all team mates doubt you,

But make allowance for their shanking too;

If you can putt and not be tired by putting

Or being rubbished, don't deal in rubbish,

Or being beaten, don't give way to beating,

And yet don't play too well, nor score too well:

If you can really try - but not make trying your master;

If you can slice - and not make slicing your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two imposters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the report you've written

Twisted by knaves to make a joke for golfers,

Or watch the things you gave your game to, broken,

And stoop and build them up with worn-out grips and balls:

If you can make one game of all your efforts

And risk your handicap on one attempt against Gosfield,

And lose, and start again at the next match

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your Captain long after Gosfield have gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the hope which says to him "Gizz another chance!"

If you can talk with Seniors and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Champion Clarkus - nor lose the common touch,

If neither Gosfield nor team members can hurt you,

If all players count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving match

With 4 hours worth of friendly chat,

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Senior, my son!

Group 1 Captain and Sir Bobby – Won 6/5
When asked for a comment on the match the Captain spoke strangely of ” jelly ” or something, which your reporter didn’t understand. Sir Bob (he’s 82 you know) played good and Malcolm was there too.

Group 2 Roger and Rob – Won 1 up
Best scores on the 18 holes were 8 birdies and 10 pars.
Proper good golf, there’s lovely for you!! The Gosfield pair considered it the height of bad manners for us to birdie the 3rd when they were both in the pond.
Rob insisted in me mentioning his birdie for a half on the 11th (yawn!)
He got right sulky about that one, but he did win the 18th.

Group 3 Eric and Dick – Won 2 up.
Dick (the 49 pointer) politely shook hand’s on the 16th before losing  the hole to a birdie to remain 2 up (bit of premature congratulations there, Dick!!). The rest was boring but Eric was there too.

Group 4 Bickerman and Phil – lost badly but Ian couldn’t remember the score. (Lost 5 & 4). Ian had a poorly foot and limped off before the end. Ian said Phil played crap – Phil agreed.

Group 5 Iain and Shikhar – lost 1 down
Shergar said he was a plonk ( no news there then). He also wondered how someone (his partner) with such a short name could have 2 i’s in it. Iain agreed with the plonk comment.

Group 6 Andy H and Richard – Won 4/3
According to Andy, Richard was sensational and Richard agreed. He was 9 under his handicap and yes, he is putting the card in – hee, hee, hee! The rest of Andy’s report was dreadfully boring, so …….

Group 7 David and Crackers – Won 2 up
Apparently nothing interesting happened but then Crackers dropped into the conversation a quite gnomic comment along the lines of “There were no trouser stain incidents this year”. What was that all about???! Crackers would give no further details, so we’ll never know. They whined on about giving 17 and 18 shots but “Dave dun good” so that’s all that mattered.

A win 5/2 for our lovely boys and a very nice Turkey carvery nosh followed by a bit of passion from Becky – no, stop being silly, it was a passion fruit tart thing for pud!!  Yum, yum!!!

Many thanks to Roger D for his report of today’s match – a far more understandable report than we are used to from RD !!

Monthly Stableford Constable 21st June 2023

Today’s Monthly Stableford was played in sweltering conditions on a Constable course with fast running fairways. An excellent turnout, everyone appeared to enjoy the competition – at least it looked like it from the amazing scores that were entered.

In Div 1, Kevin Walsh continued his recent very rich vein of form with an outstanding 45 points – more than half the Div 1 field returned scores better than handicap.

In Div 2 Gordon (5 Wood) Bryan put his outstanding success down to a recent switch to green castle tees – whatever it was his 46 points was superb. A well-deserved handicap cut of 2.3 !!

Ray Firth was an early starter and spent time after his round quietly waiting for a prize giving ceremony “surely no one could top his 46 points” but to lose on countback was harsh. We wonder when was the last time 46 points has not been a winner?

Leading scores:

     DIVISION 1

          1st       Kevin Walsh               45 points

          2nd     Colin Pottle                 42 pts

          3rd      Toby Butcher              41 pts

     DIVISION 2

           1st      Gordon Bryan            46 points on c/b

          2nd      Ray Firth                     46 pts

          3rd       Bob Filer                    41 pts

John Day Trophy v Romford away - 15th June 2023

Romford 7 Stoke by Nayland 2

Another trip down to deepest Essex for the third round match in this year’s John Day Trophy. This time the destination was Romford Golf Club, where a warm welcome was waiting for the boys from SbN.

The conditions were perfect for an afternoon’s golf, blue sky and sunshine (and searing heat).

Leading the team out was Tony Carman, hot off his excellent round in the Seniors Club Championship the previous day.

A lost ball off the first tee did not bode well, however a gladiatorial battle ensued over the next 17 holes with each player taking their turn to forge ahead. Eventually it came down to the tricky 18th, where a half finished the match all square.

Tony Denmead was next out in match 2 and despite the distance Tony was achieving with something less than driver, it was not enough to prevent our first loss against some very steady opposition, succumbing to a 4 & 2 defeat.

This unfortunately set the tone for the next five matches and despite some spirited performances from our players, it was not enough to avoid consecutive defeats.

Steve Tree losing 3 & 2

Roger Fleuty losing 3 & 2

Mike Webley losing 5 & 4

Pete Garnett losing 6 & 4

And Kevin Price losing 5 & 3

Next in was the final two ball, match 9 with Peter Jay (a late replacement) achieving our only win of the day finishing on the 15th with a magnificent 4 & 3 victory.

This left match 8 still out on the course, with Mike Clare having had a torrid start and deciding to dispense with the services of his driver. Once safely tucked up in his bag, Mike took about clawing his way back into contention with the 3 wood coming alive. Mike’s opponent was relying heavily on his caddie’s advice, reading lines on the green and giving distances and this further spurred Mike on to an amazing recovery, eventually finishing on the 18th all square and a ½ point in the match.

Final Result Romford 7 Stoke by Nayland 2

Not the result we were hoping for, but never the less a great effort from our boys and my thanks goes to them all.

A well-earned drink followed with the victors and the Captain’s thanked the teams for the manner in which both teams competed, congratulating the winners and wishing them well in the next round.

Many thanks to Norman Davidson, Team Captain for both this report and leading the team so well – very much appreciated.

It is the turn of SbN to host and organise this competition, to be held on the 21st July.

Full details and team selection will be announced soon.

Longest day Charity Events

Captain’s Longest Day Challenge - 16th June 2023

Although not quite the ‘Longest Day’ you could not have asked for a better day to play two 18 hole rounds on the Constable course to raise funds for our Captains chosen charity, the East Anglian Children’s Hospice (EACH).

The course seemed to be full of SbN members raising charitable funds – teeing off on the 1st the morning players allowed a 3 ball through – they were starting their second round of the day, second of four, raising funds for Prostate Cancer research. Another couple of holes and another 3 ball was allowed through – we don’t know their ‘cause’. Although they weren’t spotted Graham Cork and Nick Wright were seeking to play 100 holes in the day, again raising charitable funds – these Seniors are clearly built of strong stuff !!

Malcolm was already being well supported but it was excellent to see him being approached through his round with financial support for his efforts.

We have no doubt that other members would like to support him – any support would be so much appreciated – please pass funds either direct to Malcolm or into the account advised to members through the WhatsApp Group.

The days fun & games did little to assist the Captain’s handicap index – playing off white tees, cards were submitted in both morning & afternoon with two increases in handicap !! Whoops !!

So far £1225.00  has been raised following the days golf – many thanks to all who  have contributed.

Morning 4 Ball

Afternoon 4 Ball

Graham Cork & Nick Wright raise funds for Prostate Cancer

Many congratulations to Senior members, Graham Cork and Nick Wright, on completing their 100 holes of golf in a day challenge.

The first hole was played at 4am and the final hole was played just after 10pm, in complete darkness – probably the best way to play the 18th Constable  – just as well it was the longest day of the year.

Graham & Nick were raising funds for Prostate Cancer Research and we are sure would welcome any further support – £3093 has been raised so far –

This can be done through http://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/the-big-golf-race-2023-36789

A fantastic effort Graham & Nick.

Senior Captain/Vice Captain challenge

As you may know, the Captain has introduced a new challenge for 2023. Any pair wishing to take on this dynamic duo should contact Malcolm Norton, who will add your name to his list of opponents. There is no entry fee, although a donation to the Captain’s chosen charity for the year, EACH, would be gratefully received.

 Not played in June

Bunkers

Greenkeeper maintenance of bunkers is ongoing, however, we can all do our bit to improve the state of these nasty hazards!

It was mentioned that during the June stableford, there were numerous bunkers that hadn’t been raked after play, or raked half-heartedly.

I’m sure that most of us do perform this task quite diligently, however, if you are unfortunate enough to land in one of these, please ensure you rake the area thoroughly, and raking any other forgotten nearby imprints would be of great benefit to ensuing players. Many thanks.

Obituaries

                                    Tony Smith Deceased, 1933 - 2023

We are very sad to advise members of the passing of Tony Smith, very suddenly following a short period spent in hospital – Tony was just a few weeks short of his 90th birthday.

Tony was well respected throughout the section, serving as Seniors Captain in 1994 / 95 before then going on to serve as Club Captain a few years later.

Tony thoroughly enjoyed his golf at Stoke by Nayland but the hills and the fact that many of his friends had joined Colchester GC resulted in his move to Colchester several years ago – a move that he seemed to regret for many years.

His funeral is being held at Colchester Crematorium on the 3rd July at 11:45 and any members that are able to attend will be made very welcome.

Our thoughts are very much with Tony’s wife and family at this difficult time.

                               Roger Milne Deceased, 1945 – 2023

We have been advised of the sad passing of Roger Milne.

No further information is available at the moment.

Happy Birthdays in July to the following Seniors Members  (apologies if I have omitted anyone)

Michael Aldir, John Gunby, Robert Wheatley, Dave Drew, Rod Harman, Alan Austin, Phil Sayer, Les Norman, Andy Higginson, John Jardine, Russell Cawtheray, Tony Emms and Ian McKay.

Many Happy Returns to You All.
