SENIORS
September 2023
From your Captain:
It was a real privilege to have nearly seventy of you Playing in my charity day.
You will all know by now that on the day a fantastic amount of nearly £6000.00 was raised. Thank you to all those that took part and special thanks to Ian, Peter, Allen and Lionel for their valuable help on the day.
Another first for me was to organise the committee cup, this was held at Stock Brook Manor in Billericay. I was able to invite ex senior’s captains and committee members and as a special thank you, I also invited the small group of dedicated tee bookers who get up at all hours to book tees to enable us to play together in the swindle.
It was also good to have Glen Jackson, Harry Hibbert and Karl Hepple to play with us.
Congratulations to Peter Garnett who lifted the trophy.
We have decided to purchase a new trophy for the summer pairs competition and rename it the Ray Firth Trophy.
As you will know, Ray along with John Williams were the current holders of the trophy and we thought it would be appropriate to remember Ray in this way.
I know several of you will be joining me at Rays funeral on 7th September to pay our respects.
The inter club matches are proving to be challenging for us, it seems that in nearly every match, we give a number of shots away.
I have thoroughly enjoyed playing in these and representing the senior’s section. With just a few remaining, let’s hope for some good results.
The winter singles and pairs are soon to be announced and I urge you to make sure that you have twelve qualifying cards in before you enter.
Please keep raking the bunkers and repairing your pitch marks, you know it makes sense!
Seniors' Guest Day
Seniors' Guest Day is to be held on Wednesday 27th September on the Gainsborough course off the green tees.
For those who are unaware, this is an opportunity to invite a friend, of a senior age, to play in a better-ball competition. Although very competitive, this is very much a social occasion.
In the past this event has been very well supported and we're hoping we can replicate that this year.
Karl has agreed to reserve tees and with prizes and a meal to follow the cost should be no more than £30 per player.
The Board is not supporting this competition so we are organising it ourselves. If you wish to bring a guest and take part please contact either John Williams or Alan Line either by email or WhatsApp and preferably as soon as possible. We need to have a reasonable idea of numbers for Karl to book the tees and for the competition to go ahead.

Inter Club Matches
Inter Club Match v Hintlesham - Away - 2nd August 2023
Hintlesham 5 Stoke by Nayland 3
A typical old fashioned UK summer’s day greeted our boys at Hintlesham G C……….ie wet and windy. These conditions lasting not far short of when most of the 4 balls finished. When surprise, surprise the sun came out! The course was in excellent condition, with the greens playing very true, if a bit slow due to the rain.
First out into the rain and wind was our Captain & Pete. Didn’t go according to plan to start with, going 2 down, but our captain and Pete are made of strong stuff and hauled themselves back to start the back 9 all square. They carried that form through the early holes on the back 9, going 2 up which they kept till the 17th and going out winners 2 – 1
Next out were Steve and Mal who faced the mighty Mick Lambert who dazzled the Tractor Boys with his footballing skills back in the 70’s. Steve and Mal were 1 up on the 3rd which was the only time they were in the lead. Unfortunately for Steve and Mal, Mick’s sporting skills carried over into his golf and, with the help of his partner Geoff, overhauled our boys and were 2up at the turn. Both Mal and Steve’s putters were cold and despite getting back to 1 down, soon found themselves 3 down again. Finally Mick and Geoff put our boys out of their misery by winning 4 & 2.
Ian and Richard were never in the contest, certainly on the front 9, where they found themselves 4 down to opposition who Ian said chipped and putted like pro’s. Did slightly better on the back 9, but according to Ian, he and Richard had no luck!!
Following them were Richard and Gordon ‘Tesco Metro’ Bryan. According to Gordon it was a close contest all the way round with never more than 1 shot in it. Fortunately the 1 shot was in their favour, winning 1 up.
Game 5 saw Graham and Roger hit the fairways……well Corky did fortunately as RD had one of his off days. Infact it was Corky v the Hintlesham boys with RD watching on in admiration of his partner. With Corky playing 6 under his handicap, the result was never in doubt, with them, well Corky really, going out winners 2 & 1.
Andy and Nick set off on the 17th tee which rather threw them, losing their way from the very start of their match. Andy said he had a belter of a bad round, which left Nick to try and fend off the opposition. Which unfortunately he couldn’t and the Hintlesham boys, according to Andy just nicked it 7&6!!
Game 7 saw TC and Bill head off. A very tight match, where according to TC there was a lot of ‘nicking’ going on! Well I think that is what he said; or was it ‘necking’. Anyway, they did alright up until the last few holes, where finally their wheels game off, going down by 2.
Final pairing of Kevin and Brian saw a tight match, with very little in it or as some would say, ‘nip and tuck’. (Just had to put that in!!) However the hosts forgot they were the hosts, reeling off gross birdies on the 14th and 15th which meant Kevin and Brian ran out losing 3 & 1.
The game was followed by a very nice meal, which our Captain said was the best meal he had had after an Inter Club game. What better than a SbN meal………surely not!!
Many thanks to Mal Jones for his excellent reporting of today’s fun and games at Hintlesham – clearly a tough days golf.

Inter Club Match v Benton Hall - Away - 4th August 2023
Benton Hall 4½ Stoke by Nayland 3½
We started out with real trepidation, if not dread of getting drowned….however, at least our early crew almost escaped undrenched. Course played well, and food was fine, bar maybe the child size chicken pie.
Malcolm & Colin had a tight game for 7 holes then Malc advised Colin he was needed so he switched off…problem was, so did Malc. Suddenly they were 4 down and never recovered. Best bit was avoiding the rain entirely.
Lost 5&4
Bob & Iain . What a front 9!..jelling in well. Bob birdied the silly sloping 8th.over the pond, and by the ninth were 5 up winning 6 on the spin.
Won 6&4
Dick & Phil dovetailed like a blind carpenter! Phil couldn’t putt and Dick couldn’t hit a fairway, but somehow they kept in touch and were only one down with one to play, but true to form Dick made the rough and Phil missed a putt for a half…..Oh dear!
Lost 2 down
Phil & Ian had a friendly game, and enjoyed the generosity at the half way hut. They putted well, and put up a couple of birdies to keep ahead all the way.
Won 5&3
Del & Gordon had an even front 9 making all square. The opposition had some 20ft putts finding the hole which they may have thought lucky!! Del tried to stage a comeback but to no avail…so over by 17th.
Lost 3&1
Bill & Brian went from 4 down back to 1 but no good ..couldn’t handle giving 18 shots to one player, then getting wet through at 17.
Lost 2&1
John & Phil saw John play like God, going 4 up, but Benton pulled back to go 2 up….both decided to take it to the last putting both balls in the pond! Losing the last.
All square
Peter & Alan…never more than one in the match. Benton man off 25 getting net Eagle. Our boys flourished however in the heavy rain!
Win 2 up
Many thanks to (Sir) Bob for his great report of todays match with Benton Hall – cheers Bob

Inter Club Match v Stowmarket - Away - 8th August 2023
STOWMARKET 6½ STOKE BY NAYLAND 1½
This match was originally scheduled for the middle of March but postponed due to the course being closed because of adverse weather. Today was a completely different story with the course being in excellent condition and the sun even came out for a while.
The golf was then followed by a very nice lunch of Lasagne with salad and garlic bread.
MATCH 1 MALCOM NORTON / TONY CARMAN – LOST 4 & 3
Malcolm spent a lot of time in a lot of bunkers. We gave our opponents 30 shots between them and they used them to great effect. John Bell, who played very consistently off his 26 h/c and was outdriving us on a lot of occasions was 82 years of age (same as our Sir Bob). 2 down after 9, never recovered.
MATCH 2 TONY DENMEAD / BRIAN ROLOFF – WON 2 & 1
A slow start , only 1 down after 5 holes thanks to Brian, Tony then kicked in and we slowly got back to 4 up with 6 to play. They then started to come back at us winning 2 of the next 4 holes. A half on 17 saw us over the line. No need to mention the 11 & 13 shots given away. Ed-but we will!
MATCH 3 JOHN JARDINE / PETE HELE – MATCH HALVED
Never got in front in this match, another slow start being 2 down after 3 but managed to get it back to 1 down after 9. A very tight back 9 saw us get a half by winning the 18th. A really good game in great company
MATCH 4 IAIN GAULT / NEIL ASHWELL – LOST 5 & 3
i Too many trees
ii Too much grabby grass
iii Greens difficult
Paul and Robert didn’t have these problems, Paul especially played very well and made the most of his shots.
MATCH 5 IAN BICKERS / STEVE MITCHELL – LOST 6 & 5
A very one sided match, 4 down after 4, 5 down after 9.
Eventually lost 6 & 5 without winning a hole.
MATCH 6 PHIL BRENNAN / PHIL BOYLAND – LOST 3 & 2
SBN boys were well beaten, dropping to 4 down at one stage. It looked like the game had turned when Phil Boyland birdied the 7th. Pulled it back to 2 down but the Stowmarket boys continued to play well and the match slipped away.
MATCH 7 ALAN LINE / JOHN WILLIAMS – LOST 2 & 1
Their 20 something handicapper played exceptionally well, being 1 over gross after 5 holes leaving us 3 down. Fought back valiantly but lost 2 & 1.
MATCH 8 BILL KEMTER / COLIN POTTLE – LOST 1 UP
An up and down round for both teams before Stowmarket took a slender lead toward the end. A nailbiting finish saw the 18th halved to see the home team win by a slither.
Many thanks to Tony Denmead for his expert reporting of todays tough match at Stowmarket.

Inter Club Match v Felixstowe - Constable - 11th August 2023
SbN 7 Felixstowe 1
A small though for the day :–
I suppose golf is a sport, technically, sure.
But we both know it’s so much more.
It is just a game, on paper, you’re right.
And yet we play all day and toil at night.
From Palmer to Nicklaus; Tiger to McIlroy,
The game of golf is one of happiness and joy.
And then there’s you and me, early on rainy Sundays;
We love this game every day, even if we hate it some days.
We pray in vain to our driver on the tees,
And beg our putter to behave upon the greens.
We watch our heroes on the TV screens,
Because we know they know what golf means
The day started off with the thoughts of playing golf on a nice sunny day however a few specks or rain did not dampen the Stoke By Nayland team, who took to the Constable course to rage battle against the folk from Felixstowe Ferry Golf
Group 1
Win 4 and 3
Captain Norton and a late stand in Brian Roloff gelled together very well and parred majority of holes going 3 up on the turn even though they were giving shots away to Felixstowe, they played so well on front 9 they were 1 over gross, and finished up the 18 holes with a score of 45 points betterball including 1 blob
Group 2
Lost 4 and 3
Close match for Nick and Kevin who were receiving shots from Felixstowe and match was like a YoY o as SBN were down then up and by the 7th it was a very close comp. Felixstowe finally going 1 up and then a stunning birdie on the 9th put Felixstowe in a 2up position on the turn. Kevin had a few putts which rolled around the hole . Match finally was lost on the 15 as Felixstowe team both played well above handicap
Group 3
Won 5 and 3
Mike and Peter went 2 up at the turn with both getting Birdies on the 8th, game was closed on the 15th and by all accounts Mike played like a god. Match was once again played in good spirits
Group 4
Won 3 and 2
Steve and Ian were giving away an incredible 21 shots to Felixstowe but managed to go 3 up very early in the match however Felixstowe fought back and bought the match back to all square on the turn, they then went 1 up but Steve and Ian won the next 4 holes on the trot winning the match on the 16th
Group 5
Won 2 and 1
Bob and Terry were evenly matched against Felixstowe in shots however Bob was inspirational again and in sparkling form. In fact a memorable fact from the match was Terry’s putt on the second which hit the pin and by all accounts if the pin had not been there his ball would have carried on to the 7th green. The pairing dovetailed very well winning the match on the 17th
Group 6
Won 3 and 1
Andy and John were giving shots away to Felixstowe and game was very tight, game was played in a very friendly spirit and was very closely contended with SBN finally winning the match on the 17th which they both parred
Group 7
Won 3 and 2
Phil and Adrian – sorry did not manage to get a report of this match as I think the call of the Roast Pork and excellent crackling was more important than a report but SBN won this match
Group 8
Won 4 and 3
Eric and Dick went out with similar handicaps to the Felixstowe team and was a very close front 9 however with Pars and Birdies on nearly all the back nine, including two 4 pointers from Dick secured the match for SBN
Congratulations to David Quinlan of Felixstowe for winning nearest the pin on the 8th
Congratulations to Peter Hele for winning nearest the pin for SBN on the 13th
Lunch was a very enjoyable carvery with all the trimmings and very crunchy crackling.
Many thanks to Nick Wright for reporting on today’s great win against Felixstowe.

Inter Club Match v Clacton - Constable - 17th August
SbN 3½ Clacton 4½
The Seasiders ventured to SbNGC for the first time for several years and apparently many of their satnavs had forgotten how to get here too! The weather was beautiful, and the Constable was in good nick, what could go wrong?
Group 1: Malcolm Norton & Kevin Price – Lost 1 hole
A nail-biter of a match with our valiant Captain and his partner fighting back from 3 down with 5 to play, to take it down the last. Unfortunately the Captain’s superb par wasn’t enough as Bob slotted in for four with a shot!
Group 2: Iain Gault & Eric Fisher – Won 2 up
Another tight match. We thought we were in trouble when Phil (14) scored a net eagle at the 3rd and Jeff (21) scored a net par on the 4th to put Clacton 2 up. SbN fought back and were all square at the turn. Iain and Eric were dovetailing well and managed to claw their way to dormy after the 16th. Jeff won the 17th with a shot to take it down the 18th, but a par from Eric was enough to seal the deal for SbN. Really good game played in good spirit.
Group 3: Brian Roloff & Adrian Cherry – Won 5&4
Game All Square on the 9th tee, then SbN lit the afterburners and won the next 5 holes to kill off the game. A good partnership, with both playing well, it payed dividends.
Group 4: Tony Carman & Phil Brennan – All Square
A birdie on the 13th from Tony put SbN 2 up, and it stayed like that until the 17th when Michael from Clacton holed a 30 footer for a four with a shot and a win. Tony & Phil both blew up on the 18th (couldn’t take the pressure) gifting the hole to the visitors to halve the match.
Group 5: Phil Hickey & Alan Line – Lost 6&4
The SbN pair were well beaten by better players. Missed putts, poor drives and iffy approach shots meant that SbN were always (unsuccessfully) chasing the game! Good company, nice weather, shame about the golf! Qué sera, será!
Group 6: Roger Davies & Norman Davidson – Lost 2 & 1
According to the Welsh bard, they came a gallant second but enjoyed the beating! Apparently the fact that Clacton’s 22 handicapper drove the ball 70 yds past the fairway bunker on the 12th was indicative of their problem. However, they thought the lunch was lovely!
Group 7: Phil Boyland & Andy Cracknell – Lost 1 hole
“We were up against it” they bleated, Clacton’s 23 handicapper was scoring net eagles and birdies, so what could they do? Both Clacton players were playing well, and to be fair, given the number of shots they were conceding, the SbN pair did well to take it to the 18th.
Group 8: Colin Pottle & Kevin Walsh – Won 2 up
A high quality match with pars and birdies galore! SbN kept their noses in front despite having their lead cut back to 1 up on the 15th. SbN held their nerve to close it out on the 18th.
After the meal the Clacton Captain, after celebrating their 4.5 to 3.5 victory, was very complimentary about the beauty and condition of the course, and said how they were all glad that SbN was now back on their rota after an absence of six or so years, and that they looked forward to welcoming SbN Seniors for the return in September.
Many thanks to Iain Gault for his reporting of today’s match against Clacton – thanks Iain.

Inter Club Match v Frinton - Gainsborough - 23rd August
Stoke by Nayland 3½ Frinton 4½
After being taken apart 8-0 in the very recent away match everyone assembled with a certain amount of trepidation as to what sort of team we would be playing today, a team with more than its share of high handicap golfers.
The conditions were perfect – clear blue skies and very little wind.
Match 1 – A great start by our Captain & Alan L. Despite losing the 1st hole they fought back and took a 1 hole lead into the back 9 where they turned on the gas winning by 5 & 3
Match 2 – A close match throughout and very difficult to get in front against a Frinton pair playing below their handicaps. The Frinton pairing eventually coming out winners 2 & 1
Match 3 – Despite the SbN teams best efforts in holding the match to all square after 9, they succumbed to outstanding play from one of their opponents, who would have scored 44 pts Stableford, eventually losing 3 & 1. The highlight of the round was Kevin Ps backward roll to get out of a bunker on the 3rd.
Match 4 – Despite a couple of birdies by the home team, Frinton finished the front 9 1 up. The Stoke team responded strongly, with 3 back to back birdies by Eric F, to go 3 up after 14 but Frinton fought back very strongly to halve the match.
Match 5 – 4 up after 7 holes the Stoke team thought they were in for a straightforward day at the office. The Frinton team fought back strongly, reducing the deficit until David S, on his own admission, entered the match to win the 17th and a 3 & 1 victory.
Match 6 – 4 down after 4 holes was not the best of starts despite (allegedly) doing little wrong. Giving away 18 & 19 shots to their opponents was pretty hard work and the Stoke boys did well to hold them to a 5 & 3 defeat.
Match 7 – The Stoke team joked that Frinton would have 4 birdies in the front 9 and lo and behold they watched in horror as this happened. Bill K played really well, but unsuccessfully, to try and redress this – the team falling to a 6 & 5 defeat.
Match 8 – A thoroughly enjoyable match but woefully slow !! There was never much in the match with the Frinton lads going 2 up on a couple of occasions. The Stoke pairing battled away – never easy with the number of shots being given away, particularly to one of the opponents who was outstanding on par 3s – with a shot! 1 down with 2 to play – wins on both left the SbN team winners by 1 hole.
A very good meal finished the day – a vast improvement on a few weeks ago but, as a Captain said “It’s not the winning that matters ………” – oh yes, it is !!
