From your Captain:

Fellow Seniors,

Organisation is my word for this month. Having just returned from a week’s golf in Turkey, I appreciate the effort that people put into organisation. For tour operators, it’s their job, for which they are remunerated. However, somebody else has to manage all the administration and arrangements for individual travellers. Most of us would do it for our families, but it becomes more complex when you are arranging things for 12-16 different people, who all want to work to different time scales. Some people are born organisers, but others worry sick about getting it right. Whichever group you fall into, I take my hat off to you.

On this subject, our VC, Graham Cork, is busy putting the final touches to his VC tour, on the 13th-15thMay, at Greetham Valley. Having managed this myself last year, I’m fully aware of the efforts required and last minute changes. As is usual, we have 1 or 2 late withdrawals, for which Graham would dearly love to fill the spaces. If you now find you have space in your diary, or haven’t attended before, I can assure you, it is a great 2 night break, full of mirth, merriment, enjoyable golf and great camaraderie. Graham will be more than happy to tell you more about it, should you be interested.

Lastly, still on the subject of organisation, I’m starting to put together my Charity day for 2025, on behalf of Nayland Community First Responders. This will be held on Monday, July 28th. I know how supportive members have been to this event in the past and once again, I’m reaching out to anyone who might wish to sponsor a hole, have an item for auction, know someone professionally who might be able to donate their services or goods or just generally assist on the day. Any help will be greatly appreciated and it’s all for a great, very local cause.

Enjoy the warmer weather and I send my best wishes for the Easter break.

Kevin Price
Senior Captain 2025

A month ago, your humble correspondent implored the weather gods to bring on Mediterranean March – and indeed they did. Unfortunately, however, their remit did not extend to the Mediterranean itself – or at least that part I visited!

We’ve had a bit more action this month, with the return of the Inter Club matches. If Betfair (other wagering platforms are available) had been offering odds on the first three ending 4-4, successful punters would probably have their subscriptions taken care of for many years.

Predictably, the weight of captaincy (or acting captaincy) proved to be a heavy burden. Our respective noble leaders succumbed on each occasion to sparkling golf from the opposition (are you sure about that? – Ed), until the skipper, rejuvenated by a week in Turkey, set a fine example at Purdis Heath, which, sadly the rest of the team found difficulty in following.

On the domestic front, we have had two competitions, the monthly Stableford and the Mike Moore Trophy. Congratulations to John Parkinson, triumphing in Division 1 of the Stableford with a gross 76, giving him a haul of 36 points, edging out John Williams on countback. Division 2 was a much more clear cut affair, Norman Davidson strolling to a win with 37 points, 3 clear of his nearest challengers.

The Mike Moore Trophy was very closely contested, with the team of Jackson, McKay, Drew and Clark finishing on top with a net 59. It was a tight contest, with only 2 shots separating the top 5.

The next competitive action is our monthly Stableford on 9th April – a few spots still available for those who fancy a “gentlemen’s hours” start. NB This is a drawn competition, please sign up on Club V1.

Many Happy Returns to all members who have their birthdays in April.

As always, if anyone wishes to share any “amusing” stories with me for the next newsletter, this can be done anonymously, or otherwise, by emailing grahamcork@outlook.com . Reports of outrageous fortune – good or bad – are particularly welcome!
