David Hunter

We are very sad to advise members of the sad passing of David.

There will be a service to celebrate the life of David Hunter. This will take place on Thursday 20th August at 11.15am at East Bergholt Church, followed by a wake (details to be confirmed).

As requested by David, a private cremation will take place beforehand, for family only.

In the last four weeks of David’s life, St Elizabeth Hospice cared for him three times a day.  The family called them their & “Angels” -  as they were the kindest, most loving people and David has asked that any donations be made to the hospice in lieu of flowers. The donation link is below:

Seniors’ Guest Day

As in previous years, John Williams is kindly organising this event, which is being held on 22nd September (NB, this is a slight change from the original date of 25th September). Guest Day is an opportunity for you to invite a senior male member of another club who has an official handicap to play with you in a better-ball competition. Senior Captain’s Charity Day

I am delighted to report that the day was a great success. Even though there were quite a few Seniors away, we still had thirteen teams taking part, and congratulations to the winning combination of Andy Caldwell, Pater Garnett, Tony Reeves and Nick Wright, who triumphed with 91 points. More importantly, we raised over £3,500 (plus gift aid) for Bowel Cancer UK on the day. Many thanks to everyone involved, including those who couldn’t be there, for your magnificent support: further evidence, not that any is needed, of the generosity of the Seniors.

Competitions

Only one formal competition in July: the Monthly Stableford and President’s Prize, which was contested on 15th July. As noted earlier, the parched fairways meant that stopping the ball was quite difficult, but nonetheless there were some good scores. Congratulations to Matt Glover, who pipped Graham Vandervord on countback, both scoring a very impressive 40 points. Honourable mentions go to Trevor Waterhouse (Div 1) and Mike Clare (Div 2), who were runners up, each with 39 points.

As compensation for the shortage of competitions, we have had no less than six Swindles. Full results are on the Seniors Website, but congratulations to the winners Trevor Waterhouse (44), Matt Glover (42), Richard Middleton (38), Lionel Hatch (39), David Humphreys (40) and Colin Gorham (46). Colin’s round of 77 is worthy of note – 1 under gross between holes 5 and 16, in the course of which he had 3 birdies in 5 holes. And his reward for this fine display? A five shot cut for the next swindle, in addition to the 1.5 reduction in his WHS!

Interclub Matches

Just the three matches in July. We had a fine 6 ½ - 1 ½ win away at Benton Hall and followed it up with a win by the same margin at home to Stowmarket. Unfortunately, we could not make it a hat trick of wins as we went down 5 ½ - 2 ½ at Hintlesham, however, despite the scoreline, this was a very close contest, with all matches bar one going to the final hole, and the other went to the penultimate hole. Going into August, our record is played 19, won 9 and lost 10, but with only two more away matches, I hope we can turn this around so we have more wins than losses: no pressure!

On 22nd July, John Parkinson led the Veterans Inter Club Tournament team at Gosfield Lake GC, aiming to defend the trophy we won in 2025. The team scored a very creditable 312 points, a 10% improvement on last year, but the opposition were all on good form, led by Braintree, who emerged triumphant with an impressive 332, an average of nearly 37 per player.

Signing In For Stableford Competitions

Tomorrow (Monday 3rd) sees our next Stableford competition. As you know, throughout the year we have had problems signing in. I believe that the issue has been resolved at the HDID/Club V1 end but we still had difficulties in July. Looking at the start sheet, handicaps appear to have been set up for the green tees, but you should be able to sign in to play off the whites. When you have signed in, please check your playing handicap: it should change if it has registered you as playing off the whites. Once you have finished your round, please check that the scores are correct before submitting and ask the Pro Shop for assistance if you feel it is incorrect.
